You could try to find an opener made in 1977 instead of 1997. The old ones are simpler and work more reliably.:)

Or, see if you can download a manual for the model you have and read it. They might have setup tips in there.

BTDT. First step is ensure the wireless keypad is actually capable of working with your opener. I could use the remotes to get the unit going, I couldn't get the wireless keypad to work and I was following the directions. Turned out I was using an older keypad that did not work with that opener. I found a newer one and it has been working fine since.

You can find just about anything in the sears parts link. Look up the opener first by plugging in the model number. Then get the remote model numbers that are listed. Compare those model numbers to the ones on your remotes, and wireless keypad. If they are somewhat close, it should work. If still stuck, look up the model numbers on the actual remote and wireless keypads. You should be able to find pdf manuals on the web without purchasing them. Those manuals will tell you what openers the remotes will work with. That's how I figured out the wireless keypad I was using was not for the opener.

I bought a house 3 months ago with no remote and a wireless keypad that didn't work. Still opening the darn thing from inside with the button.

You have to press and hold the red button on the opener unit until it blinks, then press the remote button a few times.

Do the same for the keypad by pressing and holding the red button on the opener unit then running over to the keypad and putting in the code and hitting ENTER.

Worked for my Craftsman garage openers - had two of them and 5 remotes and a keypad that didn't work. I even set up my truck's built in garage buttons that way.

Same advice as above. Don't assume the keypad works with the opener. You will be doing this...:headscrat :)

If your research shows the same model as the wireless keypad and you have changed the battery, it may be easier to take the keypad off the wall and then take it with you up the ladder. You normally have to enter the code twice to get it to match with your opener.

It (the keypad) was already installed with the house and has a matching brainbox attached to the opener housing. I even found the manual for the keypad/brainbox and the opener (the PO was kind enough to keep these things).

We were told nobody knew the code (foreclosure) and so when I went to re-program the whole thing, following the instruction manual, the CODE LEARN button doesn't respond to presses. Changed the battery, took it apart and looked for loose/broken bits, etc. I have since removed the keypad and the brainbox so nobody would invite themselves in.

Thus the wall button... at least I don't worry about drive-by code grabbers...
