Garage door repair

I had an almost cataclysmic event last night as my garage door came off track nearly falling on my motorcycles. With the help of a neighbor, we eventually got it back on track but due to the angle it sat at for a while (I'm assuming), the torsion spring cone was pretty tweaked.

I watched a few videos on YouTube before going to bed and while I'm going to get a couple quotes from pros, I just might tackle this myself after buying the proper tools. Watching one video, I will replace the bearing plate and cables along with (hopefully) just the cone as the spring is still intact.

Does anyone have any gotchas or must dos for this fix that either I need to watch out for or not allow a pro to take me to the cleaners with potentially unnecessary things?

If the stationary cone isn't cracked, it should be fine. I would however replace that plastic center bearing(bushing). If you do it just make sure you move that center bearing plate over a few inches. This way you get a fresh grab with the mounting lags. Also get some new lags, don't reuse the old ones. Just be careful unwinding and winding the springs!

That there is just shoddy workmanship!

IMNSHO, or What I do on my 5 garage doors (each of them at a different property) is call the Pro, you might find it difficult to find someone who will sell you the correct torsion spring. They come in sizes, and you might find yourself making several trips to various stores for other parts.

Tensioning the spring requires consideration of the garage door weight.

Pay the money and enjoy the demonstration of how springs are changed.
