I used to have a Clopay that was bought @ Home Depot and installed myself. It was insulated and had a metal or aluminum surface on the inside. While looking at the pricing it looks like the prices went way up. I will need a door that is insulated and has the inside panel also. The weather here in Prescott, Az can get cold in the winter. Also, some have an "R" rating. Is the higher # better?What are your opinions on garage door types and recommendations. thx matt

Higher R value means better insulation. Tripple panel doors are stronger than double panel, but don't offer better insulation. I installed Holmes Gold series doors last fall. The doors themselves are nice, but I had issues with them being damaged. I'm unsure if it was they were damaged in shipping, or the lumber yard damaged them. if I had to guess I'd guess it was the lumber yard. Clopay makes Holmes so the doors should pretty much be the same.
Prices will vary depending on size and options, but I got the gold series, with the lower level intellicore insulation, windows, low overhead tracks, with rear mount torsion springs and heavy duty hardware, so some upgrades. Doors were just under $1k each.

Ignore R value, go by type of insulation and thickness. Also thermal breaks between front and back panels, gauge of steel, how the end styles are attached along with gauge of steel used. Type of rollers. Look at different brands of doors and the construction.

To many go by price or sales pitch or even claims by the manufacturer It's the biggest and heaviest moving object at your place. Buy accordingly or live with the results.

The best R value door will be a 2" thick three layer door with foamed in place polyurethane insulation. Stay away from windows if you can. They lose a lot of R value. Yes hey are pricey but consider it a 20 to 25 year investment. Break it down to a per year cost and they aren't too bad. It will save you on cooling and heating costs. Make sure you follow Mfg requirements for opener reinforcing and struts. They are important, they will help the door survive the stress induced by the opener. I'm sure there are people that have had a door for 50 years and never he'd issues blah blah blah. It's a long term investment, use what the company tells you to use.

Since you seem sort of new at this from your questions, I will offer up this advice: manufacturer R-values on garage doors are complete B.S. As stated by gnpenning, look at the construction and get the best door that fits your budget. Also focus a lot of attention on getting it air sealed around the edges. The best garage door in the world will not keep you warm when a winter wind is blowing a draft in. You know how a leaky window feels on a windy January day, when you put your hand down near the window sill? Now imagine that around 48 linear feet of garage door. I would argue that air sealing should be the primary concern with the R-value of the door secondary.

I wouldn't say ignore the R value, but be aware that the door manufacturers may or may not be creative with how they define the R value.

I ordered a 2” thick R18.5 10’x8’ windowless garage door for 1051.00 plus tax. Got 11% off from Menards. It was special order for my new shop. The thicker, higher R value wasn’t all that much more. Something like 100.00 more than R12. Thinking you get what you pay for......
