I have a 12ft wide 14ft high insulated roll up garage door. Its operated by a “commercial” liftmaster garage door opener all professionally installe. i went to close the door tonight and the threaded rod that tightens the chain on opener broke and the door quickly closed (slammed down) i dont think there is any damage to the door but thankfully no dogs or people were under it. The threaded rod that broke is 3/8 national coarse which as a hole drilled in it and has a master link (i wonder if i am allowed to say master link any more) to I think 40 roller chain. If either of these things break I think the door will come crashing down again. Is their a product or something i could fabricate as some sort of safety to slow the descent of the door should this happen again. I am thinking along the lines of fall protection gear or seat belt doesnt lock up unless rapid acceleration occurs.

The problem was before that rod broke.
A garage door should be able to float at half open from the door springs. Set those up properly and the opener is basically just overcoming the tiny bit of friction from the rollers. The spring is taking all the weight.

Agreed. Improper spring assist may have very well resulted in the failure in the first place.

Pics would be helpful but as others have said, if it dropped that fast there is another issue somewhere. I don't know how old the door is, but it sounds like a broken spring possibly.
They do make safety bottom fixtures. They require special setup though.

I would call a Professional and get them to aassume responsibility for any needed repairs or adjustments.

Doors are supposed to be balanced by the springs. The opener is not the problem, it was the victim.

Call the original installer and have them come and inspect. Sounds like a spring broke, which overstressed the lift system.
