Hello Folks,

New member and my first post here. I just moved into new home and this is my first home. So this may be discussed before, but could not found much information.

This is new construction and builder installed Lift Master door opener. Its just 3 months old. In recent past , it happened that, I and my wife forgot to close the garage door and it was open for long time. One time we were in home and realized it after few hours and once we just forgot to close it while going out. Fortunately everything was ok. My questions are

1. Are there any devices that would alert if the garage door remains open for long time
2. Are there any auto garage door closer that can close the door after set amount of time ?

3. I am looking for something that is not very expensive (less than $100).

So if you have such device, that worked well for you please post your recommendations, reviews

Thanks

I was having the same issue with my wife... Forgetting to close the garage door as you drive away. REALLY? How can you be so blind!! Reguardless, since I have a comercial grage door opener I was able to program the door to close it two minutes after it had been open. Now I don't have to worry about it being left open any more.

Depending on how advanced you door opener is you may just be able to set a timer function on the unit.

Beware that the 888LM controller is not compatible with LM door openers that use Security + 2.0. The description is misleading. It works with LM openers that use the Security + only. Read here... http://www.liftmaster.com/CatalogResourcesV3/en-us/shared/files/tucmanuals/114A4503.pdf

Liftmaster's new garage door controller has an automatic door close option for 2,5 or 10 minutes and its like $30. It came with mine and its works great, its also internet expandable and that was like another $35 for the internet gate way add on.

I would want one that automatically closed if only the lights were not on. That way if I had it open at night and wanted it open, it stayed open.

+1 to garage butler. I had one and it was easy to install, $45, and worked great. Only downside is that it will close your door which ***** in the summer when you are working with it open. There is an overide on it to keep it open longer. Check amazon

Take the garage door opener away from your wife and make her park outside until she learns to close the door properly. Plus it is not a good idea to keep a garage door opener in your car if you park it outside.

Install a small PLC
You could program it with a timer that is only activated if the garage lights are off

3 months old... And liftmaster?

Just install the MyQ retrofit (if you have a purple button) 888LM or just add the internet gateway - if you have a yellow button. A few minutes of setup and you've got everything you need on your smartphone.

Garage butlers don't work on the latest generation of liftmaster openers... Just be aware of that.

This monitor works great and came with my Craftsman. Works on all doors.

Kit includes two parts, the small one you can Velcro or bolt to the door. The larger box plugs into the wall and it wirelessly shows red if door is open and green when closed. While you cannot open/close it remotely, it's nice to have on the night stand so I can look over and see if it's closed. Often times when I hear a noise at night, just a quick check and I go back to sleep. Installed a second one this week on my second door with a Liftmaster 8500.

I can see it now drive home, put car in garage, walk out to mailbox grab mail turn around and see the door close. Now you are lock out of the house ~~~~~~~~ LMAO

Automation and the unintended consciences.

Hang a sign on the door from the garage to the house that says

"CLOSE THE DAMN GARAGE DOOR!"

Problem solved.

My wife used to leave to door open all the time too. Finally I turned off the power to her door and when she complained about me not fixing it, I told her that it shouldn't matter, she never closed the door anyway.

After she operated it by hand for about 2 weeks, she came to me and said that if I fixed the door, she would close it when she left home AND she would pay for the repairs!

The $ 75.00 that she paid me went into the tool fund and she has been PERFECT about closing the door ever since.

I know some of you are going to say that I was unethical to take the money, but it is just like going to school. Sometimes you need to pay tuition for the lessons.

Do you have an alarm system?

I have a sensor on my garage door via my alarm system. Using alarm.com, I get a text and/or a push notification if my garage door is left open for a certain period of time (15 minutes, IIRC). I also have it set so that opening the garage door will trigger an alarm when the system armed.

I have the opposite problem. My wife kept the garage door closed and tried to drive out. TWICE. Thank God she drives a small car. On the plus side I'm getting better at body/door repair.
