Garage door security

Just bought a surelock for my garage door. Concerned about how easy it is to

iNSTALL LOOKES EAS open the door by a thief. Just replaced the opener with a new Chamberlain with all the bells and whistles. Seems the new trolleys are easy for thieves to hook with a wire going in the top of the door and tripping the emergency release.

Install looks easy. drill two 1/4 in holes and one 1 in hole (hole say included). Mount unit and lock arm on track. Install controller on motor suspension hanger and mount the transformer on outlet for the door. Connect that to the controller along with wire from the lock and the harness that parallels the battery. plug opener into the transformer.

Plan on hooking it up in the AM.

My Liftmaster 8500 came with a very similar device that throws a bolt when the door reaches the bottom and retracts prior to opening.

I just zipped tied my release cable. I see this product has a warning not to do that since it would make their product unnecessary. I do realize there are safety issues with zip ties.

I cut the string way shorter on my 8500 as I will need to use a ladder.

When out, nothing replaces vice grips and bolts. Best part is a thief will swear and give up before he finds out all the ways!

Short string plus removing the handle means they can't catch onto it easily without the safety concerns of zip tying it.

I am aware of this security issue. However I belive that as stated zip ties and or removing the handle is the approach.

Question: If somebody breaks in, do you know they are in there?

If your garage is in WiFi range, put a security camera in there. There are many available.

I use the Nest, it works day or night, with or without light. If anybody enters my garage, I know within about 10 seconds by getting alerts on my smart phone.

This notification happens whether I'm sitting in my family room or away on vacation, so if I'm away, I can just call the local Police, plus I have video evidence for insurance purposes which I hop I never need.

I've had to access storage areas with no other door but the sectional door. Pretty easy to pop the rollers out of the track on one side and shimmy in to release any locks.

I can't imagine how poorly that door would have to be installed for that to work..

Yes, and since its a jackshaft door I have the release string tucked off to the side virtually inaccessible from the outside by a thief...

It's kind of a moot point if you don't have windows in the door...you can't see the release to hook it.....

They've all been residential style track with small flag brackets and short stem rollers. Prybar on one side to open a gap, wedge and repry against the track until the rollers pop out. Thus the reason the top and bottom rollers at minimum are long stem on any door I put in.

Now I know how poorly of an install was done for that to happen. Along with lower quality parts used by the manufacture. With the doors we install that would cause massive damage to the door and track getting in that way.

Huge risk popping out bottom rollers with cable in tension along with other rollers on the same side, with doors and install of that quality....

New opener has battery backup and the lock ties into the battery.

Well I'm gonna be fabricating an alternative to solve this access loophole.

Zip tie is not a choice but replacing the rope with an alternative... like an eye bolt that would be impossible to thread from outside... no Windows in my doors for security... builder was shocked when I insisted that request.

You could have saved your $100! I did this exact fix with some mechanics wire... ******* the pull cord out of the way first, then wrapped some mechanics wire through the hole for the release mechanism up to the sliding portion of garage door carriage.. you can't pull it if you tried, plus there's nothing to hook onto with a coat hanger now.. problem solved. Still can't believe how quick they got that damn door open though..

I've had good luck with padlocks.

I know some say use a bolt, but if they gain access to the space through other means, then bolts won't slow them down much.

I drill a hole in the track, just above one of the rollers, just large enough to pass the hasp.

Bonus points if you have to push down on the door to slightly compress the seal to get the lock installed.

One in each track makes the door very hard to open.

Had a guy that installed a removable Bullard right behind the door that's padlocked to the floor overnight. It was put in cuz a thief simply backed in.
