Garage Door Sensors

Searched the archives and couldn't find anything on this, but I would like to rig up some sort of a ringer in the house to let me know when the garage door is opened. I would like for this to operate whether or not my house alarm is active.

Is this as simples as buying the large overhead door sensors and wiring them up to something like a door bell ringer in the house?

On a related note I started thinking that it would be nice to have the garage doors on the central alarm, but I have always been worried about how things will work when I come home but dont go into the house right away to disarm the alarm. I dont like the idea of the keyless transmitter since then anyone that gets your keys could disarm the alarm. In short, I have no idea of what to do in this area.

Thanks,
Dave

You may want to try something simple first like a wireless front and rear door chime hooked up so if the door is open and it closes, it sounds like the back door single chime and if the door is closed and then opened, it sounds like the two-ring front chime. This isn't foolproof because it wouldn't work properly if the door was stopped part way and then opened or closed. If you never leave your door open part way, this may work for you.

I considered hooking mine up to my alarm system but this means you would have to get out of the car right away and push the code into the panel. Or you could have the wireless module but you would still need to disarm immediately which doesn't always happen because it's easy to get sidetracked.

This one came with my new Craftsman opener and works perfectly.

Funny how I bought the whole 1/2hp opener including this for $199.95cdn on sale and yet the sensor is listed at $65 alone.

If only it would alert me when I leave the truck unlocked .....

Actually I tried that one and ended up returning it. For some reason, it was not reliable. I can't tell you how many times I found the door open when it said it was closed. I had two units, one for each door and could never trust them.

Thanks all.

It looks like this is more of a monitor that will tell me whether my door is open or closed. I have a peephole in my door that I can look through to check for that.

What I want is for an audible alarm that will say that one of the doors has been opened. That way if we are in the house we can take offensive measures as opposed to walking out there.

CraigFL's original response may work, but I am not sure if this would just be a simple manner of figuring out a way to "OR" all the sensors and whether the large overhead door sensors need anything else to work.

I will keep prowling around for some information.

Happy Holidays All...
