Garage Door Sizes and Cost

I have 3 doors planned for my build, a 16 ft, an 18 ft and a 12 ft.
I had planned them all to be 8 ft high and my estimate was around $3000 total.

At the last minute I decided to frame out for 10 ft high doors on the 16 and 18 wides, and kept the 12 ft door at 8 ft high.

That change increased my door cost to a little over $6000!

Some of the cost was for high lift tracks, but that should only be about $200 per door. Appears that the "custom size" (ie. adding 2 ft of door height, or one extra panel) doubles the cost.

Yikes. Fair warning to those thinking about door size.

I'm with 76cruiser, that seems high.
I have two 12'x10' and a 10'x10'; the two 12' wides have windows, have high lift tracks and 3800 openers, the 10' has a vertical lift track.
All injected foam insulated 2" thick doors. All for ~$5100 and that was within the last year.

Prices will vary in different regions,I would call just about every door co. in your area and get quotes..They're free! I would think a city like Tulsa would have a few. Then just do your homework. Check with BBB, Websites for feedback etc. A company with a good service record as well as installers will make all the difference! Good luck

It does seem high, but I got quotes for 3 door companies and this one had the best price and a good reputation. That best price was before I changed the door size, so maybe I should check again.

I would double check but unfortunately up to 8' high is residential, beyond that you have to go with Commercial Doors, heavier Gauge steel, double end hinges, long stem rollers, heavier gauge tracks, etc and that's when they usually bend you over!

If you are using a residential model door on a commercial size (over 8'), most likely that is going to add two sections not one. Most residential doors do not use 24" sections. Plus adding high lift to those bigger doors adds a lot more to the cost because the spring size increases by more than it would on a smaller door, even though the track is the same.

The issue is that taller than 8 ft doors are commercial not residential, and the cost is almost double.
If you can get by with 8 ft doors, do it. Otherwise, be prepared to pay up.

My 8 ft doors allow my van to fit. I can even fit a car loaded on my open trailer. Measure what you think you will need to put in the garage and go from there.
