Garage door sizing

Hi all

Going to have a 24 x 42 garage built and still not sure of how many doors would be best. Planning on (at this point) a 8' door with 1' inbetween a 18' double with 1' inbetween another 8' door.. This leaves 3' on each end for shelves etc. One 8' will have 12'6" ceiling for potential lift.

Does this work or should I go different?

Two double doors would be less cost if that is a concern than one double and two single wide doors. One foot between may not be enough room, but I am not a door installation expert. One foot for sure will look like a line between the doors, more space would be better for appearance.

I would do two 16 ft wide doors with 3 ft at each end and this leaves 4 ft between the doors. Make the doors as tall as you can, limited by your wall height. 16 ft doors are a bit more standard size, although 18 ft is not that uncommon.

I vote for 2 16' with 4' either side and 2' in the middle.

IMO 8' doors are too narrow, big pain in the ***, and 1ft between doors is WAY narrow. My shop is 30ft wide with 2 10' doors and they're narrower than I'd like most days, 12 would be better.
I always said I'd never have another 16ft door on a garage, rather have a pair of 9ft. Now I have a house garage with 2 9ft doors and I ate it.

Remember, that 4' on either side is actually only 3-1/2ft inside, put up a 2ft shelf and you don't have room to open a car door.

I am one here that believes that to many people have to much door on the shop. I assume that since your talking of a lift your planning to do some work in there. 24' is to shallow to allow a workbench ahead of the rig being worked on. I say that because I own full size rigs, if you work on short rigs then 24' may suit your style. If your any kind of accumulator of stuff then 3' on the side is not enough. Really think about how your going to use the space. If it is all parking then a lot of door is good. If you plan on having any kind of a workshop in there ask yourself why waste the door if it will soon be unused because there is no reason to open it because of all the stuff behind it.

It's very possible that code will dictate your door more than your wishes, unless you are WAY out in the country.


I was required to have 3 feet between any door, and no door less than 3 feet from the end, thus I was allowed either two single doors oddly separated, or a single door, limited to 16 feet wide, which I chose.
My shop is 24x28, with the extra to one side of the big door, which works out for my usage.
