One of these threads a guy put in doors and had the hardware powder coated before he installed it so it was all pretty white. I was thinking that

So my friend is going to need garage doors on his new garage, and I am trying to figure out what it will cost to sell him mine at a steep discount and buy insulated garage doors.

I recently installed insulation in the attic over the garage, and its pretty noticeable. I have the do-it yourself insulation on the garage doors, but they don't seal all that well despite installing brush seals etc. I figure they are just old and need new wheels and bearings or something.

So the benefits of better fitment also play into the decision.

I have one 8 Foot door and one 16 Foot door. No windows.

Prices are installed.

Chi Vinyl Backed 2 layer?
- $737 & $1178

Chi 3 Layer
- $895 & $1540

Amarr 3 Layer
- $840 & $1412

I don't know all that much about insulated doors. If anyone wants to chime in. My doors face South and collect a good bit of heat during the day. Are 3 layer doors that much better than 2 layer doors?

The R value on the Amarr brand appears to be 6.84 for the 2 and 9.19 for the 3 layer doors.

The R value on the CHI door looks like 7.94 or 3.56

Single layer garage door is just the outside 'skin' (vinyl, steel, fiberglass, wood, whatever).

Double layer is the outside 'skin' layer plus a layer of exposed-to-the-inside-of-the-garage foam insulation.

Three layer is 'skins' on both inside and outside with the foam insulation sandwiched between them.

But as you guessed or found out, the edge and bottom and panel seam sealing details matter. A lot.

Me? I don't really like the exposed foam look on the inside of garage doors with the two layer doors.

You're in Florida. Double-check to see what Code requirements are for garage doors regarding wind/hurricane resistant construction. Could be a requirement for the extra inside panel bracing (glorified angle iron pieces or strut/channel pieces installed on the inside of the door on each and every panel usually) and possibly a requirement for no glass on the doors as well.

What Moonrise said ^^

I'm in the South and just bought two doors for a new shop, Wind Code 8 for my region (150mph+) , each panel has two horizontal struts, beefier hinges.
For a five panel door (8' high), I have 10 struts to install per door.
Impact windows may be used but are costly.

If you want a good insulated door the CHI 2283(3 layer) will be your best bang for your buck. Being a steel two sided door adds way more strength than the 2251(2 layer). The 2283 also offers better protection from objects on the inside, like for objects falling against the door, being steel on the inside, it deflects things vs. the vinyl backed door which will dent. The 2283 is also a quieter door, I am not sure why, but they don't squeak and make noise when they go up and down like a vinyl backed door does.

Also, those links to brochures are old, so the R factors are not correct. Here are current links-

CHI 2283- http://www.chiohd.com/garage-doors/residential/raised-panel/2283
CHI 2251- http://www.chiohd.com/garage-doors/residential/raised-panel/2251

I don't know anything about the Armarr doors, so I don't want to make it sound like the CHI is the only way to go, it's just that we have sold CHI products since we started and I can tell you that they are a good product.

As for the wind load, it looks like the 2283 is approved for it.
