Go to the garage opener and short out the two terminals that go to the switch and see if the door activates. That will tell you if the problem is in the opener, cable or switch..

run a wire from one to the other??

Up on the garage door opener itself, he means to short across the two terminals where the wire goes to see if it is the opener that is having a problem or if it is just a wire problem.

Also take the wire off of the wall switch and touch the two wires together. If the door opens you have a bad switch.

i tried that.

found a short on the wire with ohmmeter, found wire in attic, wire ran under a floor that we had recently loaded up with stuff,
the wire had gotten pinched in between the floor and a support 2x4 underneath it.
