My Overhad door garage door starts down and then goes right back up. Ihave done all te usual stuff. Nothing in the way sensor aligned. I can hold the button down and close it if I stop before it hits bottom. I have one solid green light and one blinking red. The power went off for short time before this started. I am not sure if this started after that, Thanks Dave

It would be helpful to know what brand of opener you have.

Generally if you have to hold the button down to close the door, it is the safety eyes. Just because they are lined up doesn't always mean they are working correctly. If one light is blinking, that also tells me that they are not working correctly. I can't think of any brand off the top of my head that has a blinking light on the safety eyes. Every brand that I can think of has solid lights when the eyes are working.

Was your power out due to a storm? If that is the case, you may have been hit by lightening and it affected the opener.

Blinking red tells me that there is an issue with the eye. Either it is blocked, sunlight is confusing it, or something broke (perhaps power related).

Thanks guys. I have a legacy by overhead door. I feel like its bad sensor. I have it do this before but never had problem fixing it. One more question. How compatiable are the sensors do they have to be same ones.

look your model number up and you can figure out what sensors to order. Did this on mine, but ended up being the orig. installer had a splice in the wires kind of hidden that had come apart. These things are tricky, but lot of info on web.

A solid green light and blinking red light, being an overhead brand is a Genie! Try realigning the sensors again to get a solid red light. Pay no attention to the green, it's just a power indicator light. Power surges have been known to knock out sensors. You will need to purchase Genie sensors if that's the case. Or get them from Overhead, since they bought Genie.

Blinking light indicates a sensor problem. Sunlight, misaligned or check continuity (you can do this with two voltmeters for long runs, and a common negative (extension cord would work). Just have a helper probe the opener end of one wire, and you cut the wire and check the sensor end, then both touch the other probe to the same pin on the extension cord (ground prong for example) Otherwise yore replacing one or both eyes, order the same brand and model number.

Also make sure the wires on the sensors are not broken and tight on the sensors.

Good luck

Does it blink all the time? Another possibility is that the sensors got knocked a bit and barely line up. When the door starts coming down the track shakes and knocks them in and out of alignment.
