Garage Door will not close

Hey folks,

I have a Marantec M4500e garage door opening that will not close. The garage door starts the close process but comes back up. It does not always go down to the same spot (sometimes a little further, sometimes a little less far). Every once in awhile I can even get it to close.

Troubleshooting thus far

• Confirmed sensors look good (sensor is solid red, receiver is solid green). Also holding down on the close garage door button on the wall to override the sensors has no impact - the door still does not close.
• Programmed new travel settings (for both open and close)
• I've increased the force adjustment (all the way up to 8 - makes no difference, if anything it seems worse)
• From what I can tell the spring looks just fine - it looks like a normal spring.
• The door appears to be balanced - it can stay up on it's own without falling when it's a few feet off the ground. I think that means it's balanced.

Additional Thoughts

• What seems odd to me is that when making the travel adjustment the garage has no problem closing all the way.
• Likewise, if the problem were with the wheels or with the track I would think this problem would exhibit itself when programming the travel limits

I'm not sure what my next troubleshooting step would be.

Have you manually opened and closed the door? See if it is sticking or running into weather stripping?
Sounds like you checked everything the eyes, might check the limit screw again. My neighbor was adjusting his and the door would not close, he had the screws all messed up. Took me a bit to get it back to normal.
Another thing is does it have a battery backup if power goes out? Sometimes if battery is low the door may not close.

Yes, it closes OK manually. The door seems balanced and does not appear to have obstructions.

Do you mean weather stripping at the bottom of the door? If so - the door never really gets low enough for the weather stripping to come into contact with the ground.

My particular garage door opener does not appear to have limit screws. The travel is programmed electronically. I've tried re-programming it several times successfully but it doesn't appear to help. The door closes and opens just fine when I program the travel limits.

My neighbor was adjusting his and the door would not close, he had the screws all messed up. Took me a bit to get it back to normal.

I do not have a battery backup but good thinking!

You have ONE spring? I'm assuming that it's the type that you use the 2 rods to twist to obtain the correct tension?
If so, have you ever oiled it? I had a door with 2 of those type springs, and I had a similar problem UNTIL I took my oil
can and put a bead of oil across the entire length of both of them....then ran the door up & down a few times, and then
it opened/closed a LOT better....they do tend to bind as they get older, and THIS really helped.

Try contacting the manufacturers tech support. Call them when you are in the garage. They may be able to help you do some tests to trouble shoot your problem.
The garage door opener companies (Chamberlain and Genie) that I've dealt with in the past had great tech support.

My wild guess is a control board acting up.

But could be alot things.

Found a similar problem years ago where the limit screw adjustment was working fine but a little thin metal tab broke off inside the Chamberlain box and when I removed it I found it and made a new part and soldered it to reattach the tab and it worked fine.
Evan though you looked at everything as I did, go back and double check everything again, kinda starting over. It always works for me. LMO!

Any chance this only happens when the sun is low in the sky? Mine gets cranky this time of year, because the sun is low enough that it shines into one of the sensors and keeps it halting. If someone stands to block the sun, then they work fine. I just hold the inside button to override the sensors. It'll go away sometime in March-April. Someday I'm going to print a pair of black tubes to shade the eyes, just like the old openers had.

Had a similar issue with my Chamberlin opener, one of two both installed at the same time. Original installer replaced the circuit board, adjusted the doors, etc and said might have to replace the entire opener. Had the owner of another door company recommend swapping the eyes/sensors to opposite sides of the door. Never had in issue since.
