Garage door will not open when cold?

Hey guys i have a problem. When it gets around say 10 degrees or colder my electric garage door opener will not work right. And since today its -20 with the windchill its really acting up. When i hit the button the door will go up about 8 inches and then go back down.I have to sit there and hit the button 15+ times before it will open. It only does this when its really cold.I dont get it. Has anyone run into this before and have any ideas what the problem is?...........Thanks guys...Joe

your house knows how cold it is outside and is trying to protect you from the weather

I think this is your problem. You may be able to adjust the trip level on the opener. Otherwise, use some lighter lubricant on the door tracks, and/or get out of the car and help the door go up with your hands.

Sounds like it's a safety switch, as mentioned. Might also be something out of alignment due to the cold weather/frozen ground.

I have had the exact same problem at each house that I've owned. There is an adjustment on the opener for the amount of force that the opener applies. There is an adjustment for open and for close. Simply rotate the adjustment knob to increase the open force. Mine are located behind the panel for the opener light bulb.
PS - I tried to attach a picture of the adjustment knobs, but the file size was too large. I've never done this before, any help available? Thanks

your problem is the travel limit switch. your opener thinks its hitting something before it reaches its stop point and its reversing for safety

Hey guys thanks for the help. I did try to push it up as it was going up and it did work doing that. Ill have to get up there and adjust the force. And if i can find a pic of my coronet on this puter ill gladly post it! Ill go look!.Thanks.joe!

Good point Junkman. My only defense is that I didn't install it, pretty weak, I know. The wires are behind the light bulb cover and I never see them, except to take a picture and put on the WWW for the entire world to see.

Adjust the force for both the up and down motion. Also, grease all door hinges, the trolley and rails and make sure that the torsion springs are in good operating condition. The door should open and close very smoothly with the use of one hand, with little effort.

when the door closes, a 2x4 under the door should make it go back up.
when it opens, pulling on it half decently should make it stop.


Before you mess with that, your springs should be set for a relatively neutral door. I like mine a little heavy, so it still seals well on the bottom if the opener is disconnected.

Absolutely amazing nobody yet has suggested pulling the release to determine if it's a door problem or an operator problem.
Hell till that is determined you might as well beat on the car roof with a broomstick and see if that makes the OH door work better.

Oh, please post the name of the installer, I'm sure he'd want the publicity for that wonderful wiring he did.

I am having a similar problem with my door. the first problem was it wouldn't open at all. I detached it, and tried to lift it.. finally it lifted. The Rubber was frozen to the concrete.

Secondly, it closes about 2/3 of the way and bounces back in this cold weather.

Some douche bag that owned the house before me, apparently hit the track on the one side.

I have yet to track down a replacement out of shear laziness. but i did rebend it a little with my pry-bar .

I did notice, that the bent track has a lot more effect on the door bind in the cold months. In summer it works perfectly. This winter, it's been pretty sticky.

Unless the wife hit it and forgot to mention it? huh...
