garage door with no spring

I have a single-car (3rd car) garage door. It does not have any springs on it at all. I can open and close (hell my 13yr old daughter can) without any issues. It stays up when opened.

The question is should it have a torsion spring or lift springs for a 3/4 Chamberlin garage door opener to work without any issues? This is my shop space so it should be minimal opening and closing traffic.

I think that chamberlain can handle it. Think about this: when you disengage a garage door opener from the door and open/close it manually, the force is about what an average human can exert.

If your daughter can do it, the opener can.

I had a single aluminum 'california' door on a garage that didn't weigh but 30 pounds. even it had springs.

I'm guessing it has a torsion tube instead of torsion springs. The tube across the top of the door that the rollers for the cables are on is slightly larger than it appears to need, say 1 1/4 to 1 1/2"?

Ding, ding, ding.... We have a winner.

I have one of those 20x20 carports that I made into a small garage, it has two old wooden 7x9 doors on it that I had to modify to fit. I had an opener on one and the spring broke.

It isn't used much but being me I removed the cables and just let the opener do it's thing for probably 15 years. Finally the gear in the opener gave up and a month or so ago I ordered a spring for it. I also had to order cables because i couldn't find them.

The door would run smoothly going up but the last foot coming down it would shake and jump.

Being there is no man door it's now a lot nicer opening it by hand and not waiting for the opener.

Possibly a Wayne Dalton door ?

This is what I have and had to convert them over (on the house garage) to torsion springs for the new Genie openers.
