I am beginning the process of selecting garage doors.

I LOVE the look of wooden carriage doors but they seem to be maintenance intensive and quite costly.

There are fiberglass doors with wood-grain texture that are far less maintenance than natural wood however they are not nearly as aesthetically appealing.

Does anyone have any thoughts (pro or con) on carriage doors or have a source for more affordable wooden carriage doors?

Thanks in advance!

I find myself wanting to ask what it is that you do in the garage. Do you just want something that "looks" good or do you want something suited to the way you use the garage?

I will be performing minor maintenance and car detailing primarily. For all intensive purposes, a glorified shed.

I agree that wooden doors look great, but the maintenance would be a real pain. If you just want one that looks a bit like a carriage door, they're available as insulated doors with the carriage shape imprinted in the fiberglass. You can also attach black trim pieces (handles and hinges) to the door. Here's a photo of our doors:

They're definitely not going to fool anyone, but we like how they look. And we definitely like the convenience of modern 3-panel insulated doors. The top panel is a normal sized rectangular shape, but the door frame is built in an arch. The window inserts in the top panel have an arch shape, and the framing was just built to follow them.

I have Clopay Coachman series 2 design 21 with sq24 windows, white on white.
Unless you're extremely close, the fit and finish on them makes it hard to tell from the real carriage doors. I ran a black sharpie down the center groove and have had people think they were the real deal because they could see the crack between the doors.
