Where is the best place to get a 16x8 r18 insulated garage door. Any good online discounters? Also I have a 12 ft ceiling but the lift is not close enough to the door to hit it when up. I like to install the door is high as possible but still use a standard opener (as opposed to the side openers since I don't like the extra slide lock device). If I go with a std opener can I still mount door with a high lift option?

Best place to start pricing doors is locally. Unless your installing it yourself, you'll need to find a reputable installer, which ain't always easy! Then your dealing with shipping and worst of all Warranty issues.
As far as the opener, you can get away with a few inches on a standard opener, but a couple feet..No! Standard opener rail isn't long enough.
I have installed them with a dummy section at the top, but now your buying another section, tracks, cables, springs, drums as well as a longer opener. $$$
You say the lift will not be affected by the door. Just install a standard door and operator and be done with it! Or buy high lift and a chamberlain 8500..you'll get used to the lock. JMHO

I had a commercial door company come out (about 80 miles) and do mine. They supplied and installed the doors for less than I could purchase them.
They used a generic brand of doors that had no name on them. I've been happy with them.

We started by finding something that looked good both for insulation and structure.
We found Wayne Dalton looked good online, and even better in person.

For R18, they list a door at R17.5, in two versions, one is their Thermospan 200, the other is their Thermospan 200-20 which as I understand is the 200 with a thicker outer skin.
The 125 we got to handle gave us the impression we could have used those door panels for loading ramps for driving a car up, we ordered 150s.
Once we knew what door we wanted, it was a simple matter of searching their dealer network to find an installer nearby.
For GP, I don't work for them, nor do I get anything for posting their name.

When I replaced my garage doors, I found a door supply guy who also installed.
He was by far the cheapest. He did a roll up door at a business for me and after I saw the quality, he did my house doors.
He's in NJ though.

Why don't you like the side lock? They add an extra security measure and work very well.
I searched weeks at all the local door companies. They were outrageous in pricing, and that is cash and carry-I do the install.
Best price I found, and bought from, Lowes. Way below any price any local "Pros", and I use that word loosely, could offer.

I don't know pricing in your area but for here I would be thrilled if I could sale a non steel backed door uninstalled for $1700 even with windows. Depending on the brand the door it's self with windows is fair.
For a shop area I prefer steel backed doors. If you do any grinding don't let the sparks hit the back of the door, the insulation will disappear. If you do any woodworking dust will collect on those ridges and fall on your head or dump on the floor when you open the door. For just parking they will be fine.
