So my shop is going to be needing 3 12x14 doors and 1 12x12 door. I've been getting quotes and some say vinyl back insulated sectional doors are good. others say I need to have steel backed insulated sectional doors.

Anyone here have vinyl backed ones and have any issues? I'm in phoenix and will be air conditioning the shop in the future so want them insulated for sure.

Side note>
Anyone here buy their own doors and install them themselves in a steel framed building? Would you do it again for the $450 each you would save over paying company on installation.

Whoever you talk to make sure you tell them that they are going in a steel building. Different hardware and weatherstrip. Are you doing metal liner panels?

Yes i've told them its all metal framed building. And the question im asking basically is the metal inner liner worth the extra $400 a door over the standard vinyl liner.

I think the metal backed doors are more ridged than the vinyl backed ones.
and as far as installing yourself, it's not rocket science, but to get them nicely adjusted and smooth operation takes a bit of time ( & tricks)

The ones at my business have thin steel panels. I dont know if vinyl would be any different unless you think you are going to be beating them up pretty badly. Mine are also 25 years old and I am sure things have changed a lot since then. Just curious what type of prices are you seeing on the 12x14 ? I have one I am probably going to have to replace.

When I order for our metal buildings I usually get vinyl unless the customer requests metal for sever use.

I have more questions than answers.
it depends on what you will be doing in that area, if it's just for parking, vinyl back we'll work fine. If you're going to be doing any grinding, welding, the vinyl back we'll disappear from grinding or welding sparks. Woodworking dust will collect on the panels and drop off when opened.

Steel back doors or quieter and operate smoother due to less flexing. Steel back doors you can clean with 409 or simple Green and even wash, they clean very easily. Vinyl back have a tendency to collect dirt and overtime always looked grungy because they are harder to clean.

Make sure you get plenty of struts on those taller doors even though they're only 12 ft wide.

How you use the building will determine which would be the best way to go.
