I got my quotes for doors for the shop I’m building and yikes! $15,000 for two 12x12 and one 8x9 overheads. Insulated with two openers and installed. My budget was about half of that. It appears prices have really gone up and there is a 16 week lead time.

I’m thinking I might have to weld up my own swing out doors but I’m in heavy snow country. The prevailing winds with drift snow against these doors but they do face south so they shouldn’t get too icy if I stayed on top of snow removal. From those with experience is it a terrible idea?

I have a skid steer and a blower to keep the 400’ driveway clear.

I'd sure contemplate building something, weather it's rolling or swing. I seriously think that in the next year, the ****'s gonna hit the fan and someone will be eager to get the job and charge you for a days work rather than a month. Same goes with his distributors.

Look up bi-fold hangar door. They’re pretty easy to make, the only drawback is you loose opening height or you have to build an external frame to get to the opening height you want.

I will probably do a snow fence which should be helpful but snow will definitely still build up in front of the doors. But, there will be a concrete pad in front of the doors so I can scrape the snow clean with the skid steer bucket vs it getting packed down on gravel.

I did look at the hangar door style, pretty cool but I’d rather lose width with swinging doors than height.

Then there is the swing in option but I’d lose 6’ of shop space in front of the doors.

Do your own install and openers, which should lower the cost substantially.

in a heavy snow install a vertical lift is the best option

I would suggest the vertical bi-fold with an above the opening hinge point
( see the youtubes for an example)

the door will be an over the wall, outside the wall, install

big shortage and the prices are high .... real problem for builders and has been for a year
