Can't wait to see all the posts warning me of the terrible danger I will be for trying this but here goes... I've seen a few posts and an old thread or two where people discuss various lift designs either using some type of winch to make a jib crane or a garage door opener to move items to their attic or basement storage

So I'm looking through the local CL freebie ads and there is a stair lift and I think to my self, apart from angle of the "platform" which would presumably be adjustable in the range of typical stair slope, this piece of machinery must be ideal to use as a hoist or dumbwaiter.

It is intended to carry humans so it should have more than adequate safety built in, it is intended to carry some pretty large humans so it will definitely handle more weight than I can haul up and down a ladder. So it seems to me it wouldn't be too difficult to mount it to a wall or secure it to the inside of my racking and save myself from a lot of needless effort. Probably save a few trips to the chiropractor as well.

Anyone tried this before?

I have never done it, but if it is free, what do you have to lose?

go get it and the track and take it apart. I think the only issue would be how they mesh together. like if its a cog setup on top of the railing and you turn it vertically so nothing is holding the cog on

It's a Stannah 400... From what I can see it looks like some kind of rack and pinion drive. Worst case I guess, add an external guide rail and wheel to keep it in alignment. Nothing to lose but it's a bit of a drive away to pickup, if I can find a reason to go out there I will pick it up.

Just seemed like something someone else here would have tried before.

lifting humans puts it in a totally different category
isnt that regulated and inspected?lol
I doubt it will have the balls to do a dead lift, its made for an incline.
what ever you build make sure you put a safety cable with inertia brake
on it.

This is the attic hoist I made, using a 1300# 120v winch from princess auto ( think Canadian version of harbour freight). The dumb waiter section is removable if I need to lift something out of the back of the truck. The lift will also slide down the entire length of the attic to move heavier items in the attic.
