Is it possible to have a separate panel for a attached 2 car garage? My home is a older home from the mid 70's. It was originally done with aluminum wiring, but after a addition and a 2 car garage there is both copper and aluminum wiring in the house. Now all works fine and have had no problems but my garage only has 6 outlets and 1 light. In order to have the house panel upgraded to have more in the garage I have to bring the house up to code.. I will need new panel and rewire whole house. So this is why I ask if I can just add a panel to the garage.
:shocking:

your question doesnt give enough details for a good answer.

1. are you just talking about adding a subpanel off of your main house panel?

2. or are you wondering why you cant have a separate power service to your garage that is new?

most municipalities do not allow second power meters on a residence. but there are always exceptions though i doubt what you are describing would be one.

given the questions you are asking, and the answers depend on the configuration of your house wiring/service, i would pay a few bucks to a licensed electrician to come give you optiions.

my two cents worth.

If you have lighting circuits and/or 120v receptacles and circuits with aluminum wiring, you need to get rid of it. If you haven't, at best make sure that all receptacles are marked Co/ALR, and have good tight connections with anti-corrosive paste on them.

BTDT got the trophy............... aluminum wiring on general purpose receptacles burning up...................

Yes you can add a sub panel in the attached garage. Since it is attached, you can have multiple feeds and/or a subpanel.

Are the existing receptacles and lights on one circuit to the garage?

Do you need 240 VAC in garage?
