Recently wired up a control jbox for controlling the exhaust fans and lighting in a garage on a project I am working on. I admit this isn't the cleanest job I have ever done, but am pretty happy with how it turned out.
The lighting is controlled by an occupancy sensor and can be overridden by a switch in-line on the load side.
The smaller of two exhaust fans in the garage is to be constantly on, however, I felt it important to pass the circuit through the control box just in case they ever change their minds on how to control the fan, as it will allow changes in control to be accomplished quickly and easily.
The larger of the two exhaust fans is controlled by a hand/auto switch which then leads directly to the fan SL for hand and through a low voltage controlled powerpack which is controlled by a NO2/CO detector in the garage.
I am not the biggest fan of having both low voltage and high voltage in the same enclosure without a physical barrier / separation, but do believe it is compliant with NEC Section 725-54(a)(1), Exception No. 2 as the line voltage in the enclosure is all 125V for all circuits. Regardless, I tried to keep as much separation on the internal wiring as possible between the two systems.
Working in the trades for a few years now, I absolutely hate opening up control boxes and having to figure out what circuits are what and what exactly they control so I made sure to well label both the low and high voltage wiring and wireways in the junction box and will be putting a vinyl printed line diagram of the control on the inside of the cover to make things easier on the next person that might have to open it up for whatever reason.
Would love the input of the good people of Garage Journal and always appreciate input on how to better my work.
