Garage Exterior Questions

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a plan for finish the garage in the home my wife and I bought last year. I was working on planning out interior wiring, insulation, sheetrock, etc. However, I noticed several spots on the plywood where it appears water is making it through the cedar siding. The previous owner claimed to have painted the entire house in 2019, but most of it is already peeling quite badly. Does it seem like I should remove all the exterior siding and address this water ingress issue before doing any interior fit out? I know these options can range from removing everything and doing new sheeting and siding to just removing existing siding, installing tyvek and reinstalling existing siding. Any ideas on how I should go?

Figure out what's leaking. It doesn't look like there's a door or window on the wall so I would be looking up near the roof.

Is it actually wet inside there when it rains? Structures that have been around for 20-30-40-50 years have lots of marks from "life". Determine if it is actually leaking. You can't base it on discoloration alone.

Agreed .... look around and see if you can tell where it may have leaked.

Strange things can happen over time .... a previous owner could have had a garden there with a sprinkler. It does not take a lot of water to stain.

No reason to replace ... that's better than almost anything you can replace it with.

When repainting old houses it's important to clean well ... spot prime with oil primer and latex top coat

I'd be thinking about new vinyl siding just so I wouldn't have to paint that wood siding. Have you priced paint lately?
