Hey all, i did some searching but i couldent seem to find any threads related to garage fans.

i am looking to install a ceiling mounted fan in my garage to help move some air around in the summer months. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would like something somewhat quiet and i have no idea what sort of CFM i would need. I also want it to oscillate.

Here is what im currently looking at:

I have 2 of these (5300 CFM ea) in my 30x40x10 garage. Work great and not a large investment.

unfortunately i dont have the ceiling space for that. I need something that mounts in a corner and blows air all around.

The dimensions to include ceiling height would be useful -
Is there a ceiling or open trusses / rafters?

If you put the ceiling fan to blow up it will circulate air all through the garage.
he air goes across the ceiling and down the walls.
Set on low, turn it on and forget it.
Even a curbside one will run forever.
(Mine has over 11 years in it, and it was some ones throw away.)

But if you are set against a ceiling fan that NT is fine but way over priced.
A drug store one set on low and on oscillate will work fine.

Try this:
http://www.industrialfansdirect.com/CFM_Calculator.html

If your shop is 20x20x10, that means you have 4000 cubic feet. That chart recommends a complete circulation of air every 7 minutes for garages. The "ideal" fan size for your garage would move around 570 CFM. That fan is rated to move 3600 cubic feet per minute on the low setting, giving you a complete circulation every 1.1 minutes. That fan should be more than big enough for your space, but when the temps and humidity go up, the more moving air the better as far as I'm concerned.

I have a small 10x 22 x 8 1/2 woodshop. I just have a 20" box fan mounted at about 6' in the corner, facing downward. Even on low speed, it creates allot of full circulation. The dust and cigarette smoke from the other side of the shop **** right over to it.

I have about the same size garage, I use a 25 inch fan I got from H.D. that has 3 speeds and a wire cage with a stand. I just move it around to blow on where I'm working. It's actually pretty good quality, I think it was around 50 bucks 3 or 4 years ago. Our summer weather is about the same and I don't think anything short of AC is going to do any better. It's still going to be hot but it does help a lot. I thought about AC but I really like to have the door up when I'm out there working on something.

normally i just put the door up as well but i recently got a lift and if the door is up i cant lift the car all the way so with a hot car and a closed door the garage becomes an oven. I have 3 box fans going and its still not enough.

I use the post version of that fan in the house in the summer vs A/C ( we do not have it ) its a little noisy ( you can hear it chop air on low speeds) but it definately moves it .. at the shop we had several of them mounted on the walls , one thing to make sure of is to be able to push some of the heat away from the ceiling towards a large door , otherwise you just recirculate the hot air near the ceiling around the building ..

I'm afraid the only thing that's going to make it comfortable with the door shut is an A.C., I've seen large window type AC units used for this, works good but unless you're able to conceal it on the outside of the garage it's going to look pretty hokie. I've seen guys try one of those self contained roll around AC units but they are fairly expensive and don't work that well. What kind of shape is the garage door in, might think about a door that would allow you to open it with a car on the lift. There just isn't going to be a cheap solution. AC is the answer.

i might put a second fan in the ceiling to draw out hot air up into the attic area which should help a little bit. This will be my first summer with the lift and its only been really warm maybe 1 or 2 days so far while working on it with the door closed so ill have to experiment a little and see what works.

thanks for all the advice guys!!!

you might also want to think about putting a power attic vent fan in up there , its amazing how much one of them can pull out of the attic space and lower the temps in the spot below it , I can lower my attic temp from 130* to near 90* temp by running it but I do not use the soffit vents I use the attic acess hole to draw air thru ( have a screen on it to keep bugs in there places) it also helps pull the air in the house thru the windows and cools it down .

Not sure what your budget is for this, but I wouldn't rule out a window AC unit as an option. You might be able to find a nice used one in the local classifieds for cheap. Otherwise, a quick search tells me that a new one (for your size of space) can be had for under $500. Its not like you have to keep the space at 68 degrees, just having it set to 80 and having dry air can make a space very comfortable.

I have done box fans at Dad's shop. Work OK. We have a pedestal mount version of the OP post, for the warehouse at work. It does well also.

I know you don't have the space, but this is a good one

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LNV7IA/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Have it in my barn now. Love it.

To be comfortable, everyone is correct, AC is the ONLY way.

I might make a slightly different recommendation other than a window shaker. I would probably see if you can find a Convertible package unit (like a roof top AC but the duct work can go in and out the side) and go that way. Takes zero floor space (all outside) most have heat also. You can check your local supply houses for scratch and dents. I plan to go this route or cob something together. My shop WILL have AC someday.

just a word of warning, be sure to avoid 3 phase units unless you have it available.

Good luck.

TBH i prefer to work with the door open even on hot days im just trying to find a solution to when the car is hot and the door has to be closed to work on it at full height. I think i am going to rig up the whole house fan idea and see if that draws out enough hot air to combat the oven effect.

my door is open far to often in the summer months to make any real use of AC so i dont think thats an option for me. thanks for all the help and ideas!!!

I think you need more industrial fan like they have for dyno not just box fans. I know mine will start to **** paper off my desk and blow small parts away. It's loud and like working on aircraft carrier deck. Or you can just get AC and play some music

I can't believe nobody's brought these guys up. Stunner equipment!

Over & beyond for this application.

:see:

its a 20x22x10 garage with a drywall ceiling and walls.

Try this:
http://www.industrialfansdirect.com/CFM_Calculator.html

If your shop is 20x20x10, that means you have 4000 cubic feet.

That chart recommends a complete circulation of air every 7 minutes for garages.

It is a garage. Couple corner mounted fans Will do fine. I have a large pedestal fan I use.
Also have a couple Hassock metal seat fans. Those I love.

I've got a cheapo walmart pedestal fan... Of course, my garage does have an 18,000 btu ac unit also...... I've been contemplating a HF 24" roll around shop fan....

I purchased 2 high velocity floor fans and mounted them to the ceiling wired 2 plugs to a switch and they move some decent air. Them purchased a ceiling fan from northern tool and that helps too.
