garage fans

well i think its time i bite the bullet and buy some garage fans for my house. i have a 3 car garage that i work in alot and being down in FL its hot as hell in there. just NO air whatsoever

i dont want to deal with ceiling fans right now, ill do that in the winter time when its cooler out

looking at floor and wall mounted fans plug ins (no hard wired stuff)

has anyone done something like this and what is your setup?

i work on the ground alot if that matters (no lift)

pictures and links if you have.

I would go for insulation and a mini split system to air condition it!

If you go fans, I'd recommend floor models so you can move them around and direct the flow of air to your liking. In order to get cooler air flowing where you want it with built-in fans, you'd need a ton of vents and would need to go through all sorts of gyrations to get the flow of air when you want it.

Assuming that you will really want the movement of air to cool you, since the air coming in from outside will still be hot, you can also get a more concentrated/faster flow from a portable fan.

Based on your criteria, I would suggest one of those water-cooled fans that I see on the hot rod shows like 'Overhaulin' and that old show 'American Hot Rod', which showcased cars built in the late Boyd Coddington's shop.

Tjernlund makes their Cool Breeze garage fan that might be what you are looking for. It fits in 16" framing and I think it is 1200 cfm

Here is what I use...the Northern Tools 20" oscillating fan. Does a great job in my double garage. About $125 shipped. They make a larger one (?30"), if you prefer.

Fans would certainly be better than nothing, but I think air-conditioning would be a better idea, especially in Florida.

I like that wall mount oscillating fans. Even if you have a mini-split the fans help to move all the air around; especially if you get more than one.

Because of cost I got two of the 14" Ironton oscilating wall mount fans from northern tool. $70 plus with the use of their coupons it comes it at only $60 .

I like them but they do buzz quite a bit even at the first setting. If I were to do it again I'd go bigger with the hopes of fewer rpms.

I have 1950 Emerson Electric oscillating fan I cleaned and relubed. It's mounted on a joist about 10' away from my bench. Works perfect.

I have a fan going on all the time and I think I am going to get a ceiling fan and be done with it. I am pretty sure it is adding way more to my electric bill than any ceiling fan would. If I turn the fan off, it gets damp very quick. Home depot has some nice commercial fans for about $150 and they are highly rated by GJ members. I will see if I can find the link, I know it may not be what you want, but other members may find it useful.

I use a 30" fan from home depot, it came with a stand about 3' high. Low and High output, does a pretty good job. When youre ready for ceiling mount check out "big *** fans" I think that's what theyre called. Very large ceiling fans, move a lot of air.

Think I may get 2 wall mounts as long as I can get ones that push air (alot of reviews on some of them say they don't make any air and just noise) and 2 stand ups.

Mount the 2 wall fans on each side of the garage on side walls and place the stand ups in the area I'm working. That should hold me over until this winter when I'll install to big ceiling fans like posted above.

If you are just trying to stay cool, having that many fans may drive you crazy. I would get one pedestal style and just position it for the most comfort. Another thought would be to get some of those bandana buffs and keep a wet one around your neck. You may end up with a lot of air movement for about the same cost as a large window AC unit.

I have a squirrel cage fan out of a furnace that I mounted on a stand with wheels. I roll it to where ever I want the air. It is on the high speed currently but I am thinking of slowing it down some, it blows a LOT of air.

Well I sleep all night with a fan and a/c on. My body runs little hot some say lol

The reason for the wall mounts is to move air thru out the garage and the stand up is to keep me cool in the place I'm working.

Ifnoise is isn't an issue then those will work fine. I have some of those at work and they move a ton of air.

I have 6 wall mounted fans two on each side wall and two on the rear wall that work pretty good but here in Texas with the high humidity and heat combined I usually turn on my 3.5t heatpump and close the door. If I need to see what's going on I look at the monitor for the security cameras with one hand close to one of my security guards.

It would certainly help cool you, but looks like it would take up a good bit of floor space.

HF has a 30" pedestal fan for $120 over Memorial weekend. I am by the Gulf coast in FL, and a 20" high velocity floor fan from CL made a huge difference in my comfort, then I found a similar pedestal fan at a yard sale.
I've got a wind storm now !!

The Northern wall mount looks like it keep you cool and keep the floor space free.

air movers rock, they as the name implies move a lot of air. plus they are useful for other tasks

Probably original idea has the most benefit and less impact. I suggest a good quality commercial one. Should give you years of use. We had some for 10 15 years

i have 4 High volume ceiling fans in my garage, but i also bought the port a cool Hurricane 3600.

it really puts out alot of cool air.

i also have a 42" barrel fan that has wheels on it.

airflow is good in the desert of arizona.

My buddy buys cheap used box fans (auctions) for use in his horse barn and outdoor "run ins". Never pays more than $10. The horses love them. Cools them down and blows away the flys.

Various strings, etc to hang them from the rafter so that the horses can knock them down.

If you are working on the floor a lot I would just go with one or two of those 20 inch square drugstore fans.
Cheap and easy to move around.

When one of my sons was doing hardwood floor installs one of the guys he worked with carried around a fan he salvaged from a throwaway over the stove vent.
It had a center motor spinning two fans at each end of the shaft.
It was small, somewhat quiet, and moved enough air to keep you cool but not so much as to blow the sawdust around.

Is the attic or roof insulated? The hot roof will throw a TON of radiant heat down on you if there is no insulation or radiant barrier between you and it.
