The winged wheel speedway logo is mine. It is a heavy vinyl decal that has a clear laminate coating on top. It is 10 feet wide and 5 feet tall. Took three of us to put it down. I then applied the clear coat floor topping over the entire area.

Not all decals come with the clear laminate. That extra material cost more so be sure to check if it is included in the price. The issue is mainly compatibility of the clear top coating you plan to use on your floor. Some (most) coatings will cause the ink used on the decal to soften and bleed. My supplier brought this issue up when early on and we did a test and I needed to have the laminate.

There can be a few issues with vinyl decals... One being that most of them don't have an adhesive backing, so they just lie on the underlying epoxy. Subsequently they are a weak link and can be quite easily torn. Having the vinyl with perforations allows the clear coat to bond with the base epoxy coat, so they are better, but still a weak link, plus they can allow the color of the underlying epoxy to affect the decal image.

An alternate solution is to use decals of a special fabric. The clear coat soaks into and saturates the decal allowing the entire decal to bond, much more durable. But also a bit pricey, I think it's about $30/ft2 or so.

Here are two hand painted logos that my buddy and I did on my garage floors. Ducati is done in expoxy, and the SF in enamel. Neither are cleared (but should be), and are holding up w.no insult after 3yrs and 1yr, respectively. However, the SF shield does not get direct hot tire or other rough traffic. The Duc logo has motorcycle tires roll over it constantly.

Vinyl work holds up fairly well if it's applied to a painted surface. The slicker (glass-like) the surface; the better it holds. If your garage floor is painted, and in good, clean condition then the vinyl should hold up well. As an extra precaution you can apply a clear vinyl overlay on the design making sure you cover the entire design with an inch or two to spare around all edges.

Another thought is to have a vinyl sign shop cut 'stencils' for you in each of the colors you need for your design. Apply each stencil and paint in the areas for the corresponding colors. Then you remove that stencil, apply the next one and repeat the process for each color. This would work better on bare, uncoated concrete. Then you could coat the finished project with a sealant. Any reputable vinyl sign shop should be able to speak intelligently about stencils or vinyl masks.

Looks awesome. I'm a graphic designer at IMS, so it's very cool to see the wing & wheel in your garage. I actually have a big cut-vinyl W&W logo that I got from work that might get used in the same way someday...or maybe the 2010 Indy 500 logo that I designed might end up on my garage floor. :)
