I have a 3 car garage 630sq ft,my current epoxy floor has been down for 22 years. It has held up well but is getting harder to keep clean because the gloss is mostly gone. My question is, could I rent a floor sander and say use 60 grit paper to scuff up the finish and then put a coat of llight gray epoxy followed by a clear top coat . I hate the thought of renting an edco grinder and trying to take all the epoxy off. The coating I have down currently is Benjamin Moore's industrial grade it was not a water base coating. Thanks for any imput. Frank

From what I have been told, one could clean and sand lightly the old epoxy and go over it with the new epoxy. This applies to like materials (like epoxy on epoxy, or urethane on urethane). The key is to be clean, dust free and a sanded or scuffed surface.

If the floor isn't failing, then yes, a 60 grit snading pad would work. Solvent wipe after and apply your favorite goo. See you in 22 years.

Garage Guy, After sanding with a 60 grit pad what solvent do you recommend? About once a month I use a long handled scrubrush and a large bucket of Castrol degreaser and water to clean the floor. In my retirement, I detail about 20 cars a year in the large area. Frank

We usually use Xylene or Xylol. Dampen the rag and wipe. Don't pour it on your floor. Just dampen the rag enough to wipe the surface clean. You may need a mask. It can be pungent. Have fun and Good luck
