I have just completed placing 4-5 inches of screened gravel on the floor of a 18 x 18 foot space. It has been packed by the skid-steer driving on it but will also rent a compactor before putting the wire mesh down. I was going to use 2-3 ' high rocks to place under the wire mesh to hold the mesh from the gravel base. Would like to see the mesh in the center of the 5" cement. Anyone see any problem with doing this?

How are you planning to keep the mesh from sliding off of the rocks? What I do is cut a strip off of the roll mesh fold it into a 5' long triangle, wire it together and rest the mesh on top of it.

The problem would be the huge void in the cement. What's wrong with the proper standoffs, or the method mentioned above?

I have seen it done several times and helped do it myself. I am by no means a concrete expert or contractor but what we always did was just reach down and pull up on the wire mesh during the pour/aggregation...

Rolling the ends down should work and lifting it up in the center into the cement will work also. I just wanted to make sure it did not sink back down and thought the odd 2-3" rock under the mesh would do the trick. May try a combination. Just trying to not use little wooden stakes to hold up the mesh.
