Garage Floor Replace

I am going to have my garage floor replaced. An old timer told me that the contractor should drill holes in the old concrete floor before the floor is jack hammered to give the old concrete some place to go. So they don't push out the block out when they first start doing the jack hammering. Any thoughts on this? Thanks Jim

I don't think that would be necessary. Start ripping out the old concrete at the door opening and work your way back into the garage. That would make an open area for the old concrete to go.

I would imagine a few saw cuts up the middle/across would be a better option than drilling holes. All concrete contractors will have the saw and it will help them lift out chunks of slab anyway. Probably unnecessary though to provide relief.

You can use a masonry cutoff wheel in your angle grinder to get started, I'd saw about a foot square as deep as you can go.

As long as you work back towards that initial hole, you should be OK. Obviously it gets tight as one goes towards the walls, but at some point entire large pieces should begin to move unless attached to the walls.

They just jackhammered mine and broke it into pieces they could toss into a front end loader.
It came apart clean from the wall and the front concrete apron.

This is what we typically do, as I find it easier to "fork" the floo out rather than pulverize the floor into tiny bits with the breaker. Every contractor will have their preference, but I can honestly say I don't understand what drilling the holes would aid in, unless you drilled like a thousand of them.......
