garage frame

hi and happy holidays to one and all and a happy new year to you all. im just about to build my first garage and im looking for some advice what messurement in inches please should the timber be for my wall frame work?? i was thinking 2" x 4" does this sound about right its only going to be single story

depends on your location -- if you're in the great white north, you might want to go 2 X 6 to allow room for more insulation . . . . .

Also, go bigger if you want to install a jib crane or similar, even later on --

Overbuilding is always preferable to just getting by, IMO . . . . . . .

thank you im on the south coast of the uk i think 2x 6 would work well thank you for your advice building the roof is my next prob would like a pitch to it but if its flat were do i start as you can tell im no builder lol

I ran across this the other day. Check it out http://www.doityourself.com/****/garages BTW...I would go 2x6 for the walls no matter what location. Thicker insulation will either keep the cold out or keep the heat out. Also go with a pitched roof. Anytime a flat roof is done you are asking for trouble. And when say "flat roof" I am thinking as to what was done back in the '60's. It seems like they always end up leaking. A slight pitch will allow for water runoff and not allow it to puddle somewhere on the roof.

your first step should be looking at wood construction span tables, wood construction is simple an anyone can do it provided they do their homework.

Be careful with a flat roof. One of your first calls should be to your insurance agent and see how much of a surcharge you are facing on your homeowner's policy with a flat roof. Up here in the great white north, many carriers will not insure a flat roof against the event of collapse.

For walls, if it becomes a choice between square footage or beefier walls, I'd vote for the larger area. We had the same choice when we built. We used 2x6 construction in our residence for structural & insulation concerns, but went 2x4 in the garage to free up a few dollars allowing us to go 24' deep instead of 22'.

Would I have liked 2x6 walls in the garage? Yeah. Am I happier to have the extra elbow room? Absolutely.

Since you're in the UK, building standards are likely somewhat different from what most people here on the board are used to. There are at least a couple other UK people here, hopefully they will chime in.

They have palm trees on the south coast of the UK.
Snow load and insulation are not his worries.
Permiting will be.

thank you for all your replys i will defo go for a pitch roof, as for all the rules and regs they get on my nerves if only i could make my wife see the light and mive to california but alass she wont budge one day!!!!!!!!! as for the garage it can be as big as i want as long as it is 5m from any property and does not go an higher than 10ft from the lowest part of land on my property a dont need planing so i was thinking 8ft high walls with 1.5ft pitch think thats should do it. Its not going to be as big as some of your great garages mines going to be 26ft x 35ft as long as i can get my cars in that being 1959 rag top beetle, 1966 porsche911, 1966 porsche 912, 1955 356 speedsteer, one more thing if i may how do i get my floor nice a smooth ready for paint cheers rick. happy new year to all

Sounds like you're going to be fighting an uphill battle. A Beetle and a painted floor? Better make sure you have some drip pans ready to catch the oil.

A properly maintained VW does not "mark it's spot". My 62 vert does indeed leave a little spot but that's because it's still sporting the original 40-horse and I haven't went through it yet.

True....my '73 Beetle never leaks.....my MG's, however, are another thing altogether.

the dub is to be totaly stripped and fully rebuilt with a 2.4 911 engine so no oil
