So when the kids moved home a couple years ago from out of state, and moved close to us. They wanted a new refrigerator in the kitchen and put the one that came with the house, a G E Profile side by side, in the attached garage. So no problem as the new one came we directed them to place the older one in the garage. I was meaning to do some bottom coil cleaning, and with other projects at hand, I just didn't get around to it yet. The other day my son said that some water was coming from it, which is on the concrete slab with a floor drain near. So I suggested what he needed to do, and he defrosted it and said it was better but still an issue. With his sore back I was planning on going over in a few days and help out with the little ones and I told him I would take a look at it.
So when I got there I gave it the once over and I knew it wasn't the ice and water connections as we didn't need them so they aren't hooked up. I pulled the rear cover off and noticed some screws were missing on the half insulated cardboard cover. With it unplugged and everything in coolers I did a thorough cleaning of the pan which was so thick with dust/dirt and grime that the evaporator tube was getting blocked. What's nice on this model is the tube can be swiveled upward and out of the way, leaving room for cleaning! I poured hot water from the inside to flush out any ice buildup in the drain tubes, and used that to clean the wet dirty trey out. Sop vacuumed, with all the refrigerator, brushing the coils after I got everything dried up, and even wiped the dirty fan blades down. Ran it and it passed the test. While I was testing it I gave the inside a good cleaning, and then put the rear cover on with new screws and all's good.
Maintenance is a must with everything and keeping things clean so the motor can breath and stay cool, is important also. My son isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and helps me out all the time and it's a pleasure to help them out and give back!

In my experience, in you want to keep a refrigerator in a garage, you are looking at a thorough yearly cleaning at minimum. Preferably every six months.
