First, I have to say I really like the new format of the site. Took a little bit to get used to it, but I'm really enjoying the utility of the new layout

My suggestion has to do with the 'Garage Gallery' forum.

Garage Journal is my go-to source for garage organization and planning. I've 'reinvented' my garage/shop a half a dozen times in the last 40 years and in recent years, many ideas have come from the GJ

I'm doing another garage renovation this spring and instead of turning to GJ, I've found that YouTube is the easiest source of inspiration - you can quickly filter down to pertinent channels and it generally only takes a second or two of a preview to see if the video is going to have any useful information.

Garage Journal, on the other hand, is pretty tedious. Here's what I've observed-
  • Garage Gallery threads are generally long and frequently go off-topic
  • There's no distinction between folks building a structure and those who are outfitting/remodeling their existing space
  • Garage Gallery threads are much more like 'build threads' than 'gallery' threads
  • There's no distinction for woodshops, metal-shops, mixed, etc.
  • The depth and quality of ideas (once you find them) is superior on Garage Journal over Youtube
My suggestion would be to have two distinct forum topics for 'gallery' and 'garage builds' with some rules around 'gallery' to showcase their garage space with photos only from the OP with a link to how they did it and conversation about it in the build threads.

Another idea would be to have someway of condensing all the photographs in a Garage Gallery thread in a slide show with a way to link back into the thread to read about the details.

Great site - keep up the good work!

I was just thinking the same thing. Thumbnail images would be very helpful. I have found by searching google for 'garagejournal garage-gallery' then going to images brings up a similar yet unorganized and incomplete version of this concept.
