First person shooter's favorite...12Ga. With four dogs in the country though, its never been a real problem.

I always like to keep a 12 gauge handy for the simple fact of the point and click method, less of a chance of missing my target :lol_hitti

Off and on I carry a Glock 17 with Hydroshocks, usually when I am working late and it's warm an the door is open. Typical suburban home with an attached garage 35 feet from the street. With all the lights on, it attracts attention. When my son lived at home and his Boxer lived here I didn't worry about it too much. Our Lab would probably bug out before confronting someone, but the Boxer had a very "no ****" approach to strangers. With the rest of us he was a goof - my daughter calls him "Punkinhead", but when he went "on alert" you couldn't distract him. He would stand his ground, glare and let out a mean, low growl. The local low life probably think his name is "Oh ****..."
My neighbor and I watch each others homes. He tends to work late and I work early, so someone is usually aware of what's going on.

Seems like everyone is armed to the teeth, but how many of you have actually fired your gun at someone that was inside of your home or garage?

No one is stupid enough to break into my garage. I'm well know in the area as the gun nut with the Big Mean Rottweiler...

I was about to type the same thing. Everyone around here knows I carry. 9 mm , one shot may not do it but there's more. Plus the rest of my neighbors carry too. I like my street.

I haven't ever fired a weapon at anyone, but I have on more than one occasion let people that have come onto my place with no business (usually very late at night, I live up a dead end hollow, nobody has any business up there unless it is friends/ family) to be up there that I am armed, usually come out on the porch with the shotgun in my hand just to let them know they aren't welcome. Were I to ever have to fire at someone, it would be to shoot to kill because I would be fearing for my life. You just don't know what someone has on thier mind when they come onto your property........

I keep firearms secured in the house but they're strictly for hunting and clay shooting. It's been a bit easier to carry a hand gun (concealed and open) in PA compared to some other places.

Recent passage of the "Castle Doctrine" in PA attempts to clarify the use of deadly force on one's own property. This will be put to the test soon due to a shooting in my area. If the facts are anything like the scenario spelled out in this newspaper article, this shooter may not face any legal repercussions from the shooting. Not so clear is how he or anyone will deal with the mental toll from killing someone no matter how justified.

Never have and hope to never have to. I have had a couple of occasions where my hand was on it and had snapped open the retention strap. Once it clears the holster there is a 90% chance it will be fired. I won't pull it unless I really think I might have to fire.

A couple of years ago a drug dealer who lived three houses down was busted because I called the PD. Something went down between him and someone else that resulted in him chasing the other person down the street in his truck at 80+. i was working in the garage and saw it and was pissed. Called the PD and as it turns out, circumstances conspired against this low life. PD arrests him and hauls away a bunch of stuff.

Six months later he's home. Started carrying when working outside because he saw the detectives talking to me at length that day. He comes by one evening to explain the "misunderstanding" I have of what happened that day. I let him know in no uncertain terms I didn't give a ****, he was not welcomed here, and it was time to leave. It didn't dawn on this guy the reason I was at a 45 degree angle to him and had my right hand behind me was that it was on my gun until he heard the snap of me opening the holster. Once he understood the gravity of the situation, he never returned. We also have new neighbors and they are quite nice.

Had one other situation while working for a friend who is a mold maker just after I finished college. Ended up drawing down on some gang banger kid who walked in the shop and was pulling up his shirt, flashing a .22.

My friend had his Coonan .357 automag on him and I thought he was going to kill this kid. He was so jacked up I thought he was going to shoot him in the face. The whole thing was scaring me. I was going to shoot him if he reached for the gun, but I thought my friend was just going to kill him. The whole thing was just too out of control and needlessly dangerous. If either of us was thinking, we would have proned that little vato out and took the gun or held him and had the PD come get him. In retrospect, not a good way to handle it.

Like a few others that have responded, never have and hope to leave it that way. I'm a good natured and honest person, I can't lie for ****. If need be, I will take a life to prevent bodily harm to myself or my family. I have no problem utilizing deadly force.

While I was in the Marines, I went to Desert Storm. While I never killed anyone, I have have my rifle aimed in to the back of a landrover with 5-6 armed UAE soldiers.(We found out after getting them out who they were , first thought was Iraqi) When I saw who was in the back of the vehicles, I automatically switched my weapon from semi to 3 round burst with a flick of my thumb. I was prepared to fire and kill everyone of them.

I have approached more than one person that has parked in my driveway after dark. One being a friend of my daughters, I found out that later she was going to sneak out of the house and that was her ride. (stupid **** that kids do) He got the picture and saw what I was holding. I know he told several others that I had a gun and wasn't shy about it. I think some of my daughter's friends thought I was slightly off my rocker.

In the profession I have now, I have seen life slip away, been the last person to touch someone before they were pronounced dead, and carried children's bodies from a trailer fire to a squad. I have come to terms with life and I know that death can come at any time. While I would rather not die, I do not fear it as there is nothing I can do about it.

So to answer your question, no I never have fired at someone in my home but I would not think twice about doing so if the situation arose.

Sorry for the long winded post.

You won't catch me out of my house without a gun on my side! I carry a Glock 27, which is a subcompact .40cal. In today's world you never know who you can and can't trust. In my opinion everyone should own a firearm of some sort and should practice concealed carry or open carry. A right not exercised is a right easily taken away!!

Hey, are you my doppelganger? I have the same gun (love it) and view point. CCW permitted in Oregon and Utah.

I'm not armed to the teeth but since I don't like people I'm not adverse to protecting me and my family with deadly force if required. Those people who are out to do others harm for their own greed really don't belong in society anyway.

Since I am the last thing between some POS and my wife and daughter, anyone who decides to try me is going to have their hands full. We live in a nice neighborhood but that does not seem to matter much anymore. In fact, it seems to attract some of the home invasion types and opportunists.

About five years ago a family court judge and his wife were murdered in their driveway. All the PD ever found were tracks that disappeared down the horse trails that are in back of most of the homes here. The guys were ghosts. No shells, no witnesses, nothing. It was never solved and the PD never figured out a motive.

CA actually has the opposite of a Castle Doctrine - a duty to retreat. Concealed and open carry are both fantasies unless you are PD or a politico. At least I can carry on my own property... for now.

I don't like the idea of an armed encampment, but you really don't know what a stranger has in mind. The PD will never get there in time to stop something so it's my responsibility (and right) to keep my family safe.

I keep my trusty .44 Mag Ruger, single action 9" barrel of fun in my top draw of my tool box. I have pulled it twice, and the sight of it was enough to fix the situation each time.

That's terrible. I work closely with a district court judge and he makes no bones about the threats and hostility that he has to put up with. Family law gets very ugly, much more so than criminal.

As a Canadian this is an interesting thread.......

We are very lucky in Canada that generally speaking this gun culture is very rare indeed.

I have guns myself, CCW, carry a .380 sometimes. All these stories about using guns to intimidate bad guys worry me a little. I mean, I've done it, exactly once, caught a guy breaking into my apartment and warned him off.

But anyway, be careful, if you show your guns to the bad guys they're likely to wait until you leave then break in and come looking for them. Remember that most burglaries happen during the day when you're at work.

My gun isnt coming out unless it's gonna be used! I firmly beleive if a gun is gonna be pulled out it needs to be used because if I feel threatened enough to pull it out I'm using it!

I have a variety of guns, some for just shooting fun, and some for self defense, a shotgun is next of the list for the garage. I hope to never have to use any of them except for target shooting but yoiu never know. My dads always says, "When it comes to me or my family's saftey, I'd rather be tried by twelve, then carried by six".

Hi-Point .45 w/Critical Defense ammo.

Ditto. Great gun for the buck. Easy to hide in the garage.

I live in a great neighborhood, but scumbags don't shop at home. My buddy lives about 5 minutes from my house. Two nights ago, he took the dog out for a pee at 2AM. Caught a guy inside his fenced yard sneaking around. He quickly hopped the fence, and ran off. Doug's Lab was giving chase from inside the fence. Bad guy got in his SUV and drove off, but Doug was able to get his plate number. He was quickly caught and hauled away.

If the bad guy had a weapon, Doug would have been in deep shiz. The dog was on the wrong side of the fence during the chase, and Doug had no weapon on him. He says he'll keep a gun in his pocket when going outside from now on.

Times are bad. All the more reason for bad people to steal YOUR stuff, and possibly hurt/kill you and your family.

Hi Point in the garage, 12 ga Mossberg with Centurion home defense shells inside... and a 100' of swamp behind the house.

What you need is a potato cannon. Your average 3000 grain potato is gonna pack some serious stopping power.

9mm is a good alternative till you build a good spud gun.

How about a Beeman air rifle, I am lucky enough to live in a very safe area, no gun's needed while working in the garage, they are stored in a safe in the house.
