I didn't want to be that 60 year old guy telling the kid installing my heater, "I should have done this 25 years ago."

It doesn't look like the NG is piped to the unit (!) Is that during the pressure testing phase?

What size unit and how big is your shop?

The picture is me testing the morning's work. The input rating is 30000 btu. I asked around and did some math myself and the 30000-40000 range was where things were at. I have less than 1000 square feet with lots of insulation. I don't anticipate have trouble keeping it at 12 C.

Alberta? What temps did you see in the garage before?

Someday I'll add some extra heat to my space.

Only in February did it get to the point of not being able work in there because it was too cold. My little 5000w construction heater would bring the air temp up 10 degrees in 2 hours. Not ideal.

As far as actual temperature, only after sustained -20 C for 2 weeks did the snow not melt at all when it fell off the minivan.

Garage Heater PLUS ceiling fans are the best! Snow melts off and then dries leaving just dust to sweep up a few times a winter.

I think I would have gone with a larger BTU heater. I have a garage that is 864 sq ft (24X36) and I have a 60K BTU Hot Dawg heater. If it is really cold and windy and I open the overhead door for whatever reason, it is nice that I can warm the space back up rather quickly.

I try not to open the overhead door if at all possible, but if I am bringing in some plywood or some other large pieces of wood for a project, or if I am bringing in a large project to work on, I may need to open the overhead door. When I do open it a lot of the heat goes outdoors. At those times having a large enough heater to bring the temperature back up quickly is a big plus. It isn't totally necessary of course, but it is certainly a big plus.

nice, that's high off the roof? your codes must be different there. i only need 2' off the roof that looks like 5'?

I can't quote the code to you and I don't know that I have ever heard the min height I need. When I was picking up the material we did some guessing as to what I would need and this is what I ended up with.

Looks pretty good to me. Nice work. I just installed the same thermostat. My only complaint is the no temp display under 40*. On/Off through wi-fi works well... I would have went a bit larger on the heater also but your heater should be sufficient.

do folks keep their heat on ALL winter once its on? or only turn on when needed to warm up the space and work?

if you do turn it on/off on weekends or whatnot, does this create moisture issues etc? (freeze/thaw on building)

I intend on keeping it about 10 degrees Celsius throughout the winter. Some places I have worked keep their garages at room temperature.

In my part of the world heating it for short periods of time is no problem. We have a very dry climate and forced air heat tends to be a very dry heat as well.

I have never considered how the freeze/thaw cycle affects buidling materials or tools.

Don't forget to add one or two ceiling fans. Without fans, the hot air will collect at the ceiling and be cool at floor level. The fans make a large difference in keeping the garage a nice even temperature which will reduce your energy bill and make you more comfortable.

I want to put some form of top-to-bottom air movement. I have a wall that splits the garage from the workshop and I'm toying with the idea of putting something like a bath fan in the top of the wall and pushing the air out of the bottom. I may even go so far as to put a thermostat on it so it only runs when it needs to.

It lives! I know you can't tell from the picture but I assure you it's blowing heat. My dad came yesterday to help me finish the gas piping. I could have done it myself but it sure was nice to have help.
