Garage heater install

Hello all,

New member here but I've lurked a few threads here and there. I am redoing my garage, added an attic, insulation and drywall. Now it's time to add heat. I am installing an 80k mr heater in my garage soon, before it starts getting too cold here in Chicago suburbs. I've read the manual a few times, and I have a few questions. Why do I need a minimum of 5 ft exhaust pipe for horizontal venting? Can I get away with less pipe? I will be using B-vent piping, will this be ok for horizontal venting? I've come up with a few different answers to this, some say yes and some say no. Do I need to run hard pipe all the way to the heater or can I use flexible gas line for the connection to the heater? The heater will be mounted in the corner of the garage. I would like to vent it through the wall in the corner. I have soffit on the exterior of the house. Directions say I need at least 12" of pipe extending out, do I point it up or down? How close can I be to the soffit? I've attached a few pictures of where I would like to mount it. As you can see, the current setup will have about 3-4 feet of exhaust pipe.

most, if not all heaters specify stainless pipe for horizontal runs . it gets quite pricey so many people opt for vertical and use B-vent . a lot depends on what your heaters instructions say . local code is applicable too . your questions are probably all answered in the heater manual ,and they should be followed unless code overrules them

Oit needs to be 12 inches past the Soffit to prevent gasses from going up into the Attic. Mine went straight out with a Tee on the end to keep the North wind from over powering the Exhaust Fan. My Tee is horizontal, not vertical.
Hard pipe should be within 18 inches to connect a Flex Line.

Horizontal is suppose to be Cat III for corrosion. NOT B vent.
Menards has Cat III that wont break the bank.
Don’t know the reason for 5’ minimum…….but its in all the install instructions. 5‘ adds up quick… 2’ past the outside wall, , termination end, thickness of the wall, 18-24” on the inside and adaptor on the heater. Guess on the distance requirement to get the exhaust temp down ????

The vent will drip a lot of water so think way ahead on termination above driveway and side walks. Mine forms a tall Icicle from the ground up.
