garage heater with classy venting

Okay, I am really struggling with this. I want to put in some heat in my garage and like most there is only one spot that it will work. I have a garage that is 22x24 with 11 foot ceilings. The way my garage is I have a bonus room above it and then open rafters in the front 10 feet. I am pretty sure I can't get far enough away from the bonus room wall to vent out the roof unless it is like 1-2 feet from the front of the roof (which would probably be against code and if it wasn't would look pretty weird). Side venting works, but the look of the B vent really turns me off as it would have to stick out about 2 feet to clear the soffit.

Has anyone done a pvc vent or direct vent unit in there garage? Any model suggestions? Anyone done a fireplace- at least they are direct vent. I was thinking 45-60 btu's to heat it. I am in the cold 49th parallel, so I would need it to be warm. I am planning on insulating lots to make it comfortable in it.

Maybe I should scrap gas and go with something else, but I think gas would be the cheapest in the long run...help!

Here are a few vents that I noticed on a recent walk. I like the vent style of picture 6 & 7, which I think is called direct vent. It doesn't stick out as far.

Does anyone know kind of heater that use these styles of vents? What about the straight pipe with the slight curve on the end? I know the one with the straight pipe and cap is like a Reznor or Hot Dawg type of heater. All of these garages are attached to the house, so they would be similar to mine.

The flat ones are probably direct vent, which means the unit is using outside air for combustion. The round ones look like B-Vent, which are probably for the type of units you mentioned. The one with slight curve appears to be PVC so that would mean a 90%+ efficiency I believe. That would probably be a whole house forced air system.

Lots of folks in Alberta put NG heaters in garage with horizontal venting as you've photographed. No big deal. Call a local HVAC contractor and get some prices. Horizontal venting is ideal for your situation. Definitely use NG. Your electric costs are too high.
