No.

You can videotape anything in the public view. There are some gray areas where neighbors/fences/windows are involved, but the general rule is, if it is outside and you can see it, you can tape it.

Thanks for the info. They would only be pointed at the front of my house and at my garage. NO neighbors house.

...what do the experts think? How long will it take to fill that 500gb drive?

Experts think: :headshake

The time it takes to fill the hard-drive depends on several factors: video quality/resolution, motion or continous recording, number of cameras, compression. 4 cameras at full motion + high quality can eat up 500gb in 7 days. Tweak the settings and you can get 30+ days.

I have the Night Owl system with 8 cameras and the 500GB DVR. I'm currently over in Japan so it has been nice to watch the cameras on the computer here and see the family out working or swimming in the pool. Lets me see what they are up to. We've been happy with the system. It isn't the highest quality video but for those prices I wasn't expecting that. When we finally get moved to our new place I will be installing higher quality cameras. Especially in and around the garage.

Could some one post good specs? I am not rich and I have insurance but not enough I am sure. I would like to buy a four camera system which could be expanded to 8. 2 cameras will be out side. I have motion lights but I would like to have cameras good enough to catch faces or plate numbers. Thieves just kicked in the door of a house in town while the people were in the back yard swimming. I would like to put a face on these if the hit here. I would like to do this for around 500 if possible.

It seems like you could do it for that price but I wouldn't skim on a something that would give you the peace of mind. Especially with such brazen thieves running around.

Hi guys. I have been lurking and reading. I am pretty much technically retarded though. So could you guys break it down for us slow guys?

Here's what I have available. My shop is 100' from my house. I have a wireless router that I can pick up from there. I don't have a phone line out at the shop so wireless would be best. I have 2 big German Shepherds and a 5' chain link fence, with some big security lights. No problems yet, but the meth heads are just waiting for the opportune time. I travel a lot with work, so I would like to be able to check up on everything while I travel, so help a brotha out........

Thanks

How would you run power to all devices? Is there an easy way to do this or would you need to call an electrician?

Most wired cameras get power through a multiconductor camera cable that handles both power and the video.
Wireless cameras will require power near the camera or some kind of battery power.

While reading this it appears that you can do it. If it is only to document a crime and if your neighbors agree to do so. If you have decent neighbors I don't see why they wouldn't want someone watching their house also.

Thank you for the input.

I've read this thread, and noticed a few brands mentioned.

What are some good commercial/industrial cameras to look at? How about all-weather (right by the ocean).

I had a system in place 20 years ago, most of the cameras burned out.

I picked up a couple of Sony's for about $200 each (wholesale price from a distributor).

I need to start with one that either mounts outside up near a roof, 30 ft from the street, or just inside a window about 18 ft up (there's a small hole in the window that might fit a camera). Something that can get a good image at night. I don't know, IR, or whatever the best technology is now. I also want to mount a corresponding monitor inside and use it to see who's at the door at night. Maybe a 8-10" flat screen monitor that's got a good quality housing. Nothing cheap and plastic. I hate that.

So maybe a good vandal-resistant (if not proof) camera recommendation. A good small monitor.

Also who is making the best cameras now? Japanese? Anything in Europe? Is the US actually making cameras or just assembling from Chinese components?

Thanks for the insights.

OneTon is correct....but let me add....from the perspective of a normal person without the aid of something. For example....if you have a 6' wood fence...then you have a 'reasonable' expectation of privacy. So, if your in the back yard bathing ****...and someone climbs on a ladder to look over your fence....issue. But if you have a 4' fence and someone can stand there and watch you....nothing you can do about it.

Same goes for the camera....if it is at a vantage point that offers a few into your neighbors yard that would not be possible to the average person...it could be an issue. Talk to the neighbor....see what they think about it. But make every effort to avoid looking in windows....that area is not gray.....

You can record anything going on in the front of your house including the street.....it's public area...hence, no expectation of privacy.

One last option....some cameras are what are called internet cameras....basically, you can connect it to the internet and what is on it can be recoreded off site...that way if they steal your DVR....you still have a record.

My camera has a motion detector feature...if it detects motion, it can start recording...no motion....no record....saves a lot of space. I also do 1 second frames...

Seems to be a lot of great info and knowledgable people on this thread so I hope you do not mind if I revive it. I am looking at a wireless system for my house/garage that can be viewed from my laptop anywhere. Here is the system I am considering. I really need a system that comes pre-packaged as I am not a techy per se;

http://sylvaniastore.lorextechnology.com/product.aspx?id=1975

Can anyone give me an opinion on this system and this manufacturer?

Thanks in advance

So you have cameras & dvd or app for phone........ then what?
What if you are out of town?

My garage is wired for door & motion detectors. The new garage will be too.
Break into my garage or home & police will show up in under 5 minutes.

.

Then you call the police. You turn over the video to them. They find the perp and use your video as evidence. It worked for me. Perp goes down.

It is not just the contents inside I am concerned with. I have a monitored security system for my home, but nothing for the cars, boat, trailer etc. I am looking to "monitor" and capture on video anything I see that needs to be dealt with. I have read several reviews and there was a case where a guy was out of town monitoring his by laptop.......turned out a bunch of folks were having a party at his pool while he was away.....called the police and explained what he was looking at, police arrived and arrested folks. He did mention having a sign posted "NO TRESPASSING".

Also, if I am away I want it for my family (see anyone pulling up, at the door etc)

So any thoughts on this system?

Not sure what you are referring to when you say 'this system'... But that is one of the reasons I have my system (so I can monitor the driveway.)

Most systems have motion alarms, so cameras pointed at secure areas where no one is supposed to be can be configured to call a number or do some other action (such as send a text message...) to advise you that something is amiss!

yall gonna laugh at me but i picked up a harbor freight 4 channel dvr. its been running at 2 years now and it works just fine. not the greatest cameras or dvr but for something to be able to watch who is coming and going on the farm and are the cows still in there fence here it couldnt be better. so simple my wife ran all the lines put the cameras up and even set up the circa 1982 19" crt tv to it it is fed to a 32" flat tv and it looks great on that tv. the night vision is good a couple 25 watt old style light bulbs behind the cameras helped it out a ton. it does the web thing and hooks to pc via usb never used either function. some one is here pretty well 24/7 unless we go out to dinner. this months sale paper $279.99 complete and id buy another one with out thinking twice if i had the need for another low end camera set up.

dont flame me it does what i need yes its cheap yes its china yes its saved my scrap pile twice and that has more than paid for the cameras as i keep copper in 55 gal drums outside. yes it has let me catch the stupid cows before they have got in the road or caused thousands in dammage. over all a great buy imo

I really need some advice! I'm looking for two camera so i can keep an eye on my driveway and shop. I like the idea the camera only records on motion. I have a desktop cpu w/ 1TB hard drive that I would like to use as a dvr and would like for the cameras to have remote access in the future.

So are the network/ip camera best bang for the buck? I see they cost more. I watched a utube video and one camera could view 180 degrees! That would save me from buying two cameras.

I am no expert but I think the IP based solutions are better than the DVR based ones. New vs old tech. I recently purchased this guy http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0030FR08W/?tag=atomicindus08-20 for work and it works great with and without light. It has pan, tilt and zoom that can either roam around or be controlled remotely. It also has two way audio. Works over WIFI or wired network. Not bad for $80.

Just learned that I will have to buy Poe switches to power my ip cameras. Extra cost I wasn't aware of (no biggie). Acti, Vivotek, Panasonic, appears to be the camera of choice, while Mobotix is way out of my budget. Has anyone tried that Geovision Gv-fe110?
