Hey Guys, I know it's a Garage forum but may be you guys can point me in the direct direction

Our house project is about to start any time now and I have been pro-crastrating about getting our plans re-drawn on 3D mainly 'coz of two reasons, not many local options and secondly of course the cost involved (so I think).

What are my options if I want to have my plans re-done in 3D and is it really worth the effort and cost?

Please advice?

Thanks

What is your reason for wanting 3D plans vs 2D plans? Is this new construction or is it renovation/addition to an existing structure? Have you talked to your architect/designer/engineer/contractor about what plans THEY need?

I work for a company that does As-Built Plans (www.ppmco.net - shameless plug) so we deal with this fairly regularly from an as-built standpoint but don't really deal with any new construction. For new construction plans/design it's relatively easy to create 3D plans, however if you're dealing with an existing structure that requires as-built plans it's much more difficult to create ACCURATE 3D as-builts. We have found that it is generally not cost effective when compared to 2D plans. Really the only benefit to 3D in this case is an aesthetic one - they're cool looking! But the reality of it is that they generally don't provide any significant benefit to the architect or designer - and often many can't even work in 3D anyway.

I have an Architecture firm (www.jsquarearch.com) and we design and present with 3D models nowadays. It takes out so much of the guesswork for the client to see how things fit. If you have a loooonnnggg Cadillac that has to go on a lift with an SUV below, we can design for it and present that to you too accurately. Furniture placement, fixtures, etc can be included to get a feel for how the space will be. If there are views that are critical, we have placed our models in Google Earth to show how it aligns.... we also model the sun path and angles to see how light comes into the space. If the space is too small or are the wrong proportions, we catch it before we start the Construction Documents. Think of it this way... it's a small investment cost to help you to be darn sure that your large investment is spent in a way that you want it to be! Good Luck!!
