Hi,

I have a steel I-Beam over the garage door opening. How to properly insulate it?

I was thinking about cutting pink styrofoam boards to fit snug into the I-Beam opening. Either leaving an air capsule behind or blow in some insulation. Then painting over with latex paint.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

How much energy is lost through a steel beam?

I am not sure….It gets very cold to the touch.

I had some scrap pink Styrofoam laying around and I though it would be better to use it than adding to the city's landfill.

Hi I just did mine. The beam is a 4x12 and 1/4 thick. I went to the local box store and bought the Owens Corning pink board at 2" thick. Cut it to the approximate size plus a fuzz, then jammed it into place. It stayed in place just fine until I installed the sheathing on the outside of the building. I think it was the easiest alternative....:)
