hello everybody

I love this forum and I am really impressed by your garages.
after reading many of your posts it's my turn to show you my new garage.
I bought an old building (between 150 and 200 years old, we dont know exactly) 2 months to build my garage.
This is an old wine factory (no kidding).
I am next to the mediterrean sea (0,6 away)
This is my first garage and I have to use for my company (I am a carpenter) and for my hobbies (to work metal and build bikes).
I will show you day by day how it's going.
this is the beginning of a long story : I started 2 weeks ago, and cause I do everything myself, I'll need maybe a year or 2 to finish this project.

I will try to use your metric system (tell me if I make mistakes ;) )
I took a lot of ideas from your garages..and I thank all you !!

Later today i'll send some pictures of the building and some of the work already done.
thanks

Ps and sorry for my english

here are some pics
the inside :
you can see the main door (118 inches/118 inches), which open on the main street of the village, where from the old tractors used to enter

to see the nice floor :)

the old concrete tanks where the grapes were first stored. the size is nice (118in/157in)
There was some old wood tank also but I put them down (I think i ve some pictures of them)

the other door on the garden (with an old stone well full of water)

some other pics are coming (to see the outside mainly)
the building is not big : 551in/393in
But this is my first one...and Iam proud of it

You have a very nice space to start with. Are you going to modify the wine storage tanks to storage rooms? I think it would be nice to save the fronts and use the space between the tanks as a place to create doorways into the old tanks. It would keep the vintage feel and keep the clutter down. Plus, the tanks must smell nice!

you r right !! I wont put down the wine storage. Even if they are younger than the building (maybe 70 years old), i feel like in that kind of building you have to respect what was done before.
So i 'll just open a door on it to make it a special room : for my bikes.

Like you can see I am not a liar..I am opening the door right now

you can see how to use a pneumatic drill, made to be used for the floor, on a wall. the tool weights about 15kg (33Lbs)

the fire was 'fortunetly' on the other side of perpignan, on the north of the spanish border (country of cataluna). And the fire was really really bad/

on my part, no fire, just girls on the beach and grappes back in the country ;)

the land is small because it's expensive, and I am young (which mean poor ;) ). The building is 140m2 (169square yard) and the garden is 100m2 (120square yard).
But the seller has got the same one (with one floor more) next to mine; so I ve the idea to work a lot on this one and to buy the other in 1 or 2 years...space is luxury in france

Wow! That space is wonderful as it is. It reeks with ambiance. I can't wait to watch what you do. PLEASE keep posting progress photos.

In the US, most of us can only dream of old buildings like that being repurposed for our personal garage. Here, most things are (unfortunately) knocked down and replaced by the time they are 50 years old. Too bad we don't honor our past like other places do.

Welcome. And don't worry about your English. (Sshhh, truth be told its better than some of ours!!) lol.

Here people dont like to buy old buildings anymore : it costs a lot of money to turn them into something useful, and it costs a lot of energy to do that kind of work.
And the legislation is much more complicated. For example, for this building I have to send the plan of architecture to an official Architect of the French Buildings (Architectes des batiments de France) because I have an old church (600-700years old) in my village. It meens i wont decide anything about my project. It takes 6 months to get an answer !!
If he wants me to have no windows cause he FEELS LIKE it's a not good idea, I cant say anything...
SO the project can be frustrating..But fortunately, with a lot of talking, anything can happen !
More and more, because of the price of the land (which is really high),people buy old buildings to collapse them down and to rebuild new stuff on the free land..
I prefer to use old stuff. I am carpenter, I work like carpenters used to work 200 years ago (except for the electric tools of course). I think we ve got to preserve what was done before us, we ve to use it. we can rethink it, but you cant erase it.
Thats why on this project, except the roof, I wont touch the walls (on the outside).

Some pics later ;)

jemange unveil. Sorry, thats all the French I remember from high school. I think I meant to say "I eat up town". French was my first period class and each morning we had to say weather we were eating lunch at school or up town. Anyhow... I like the pictures. Keep them coming. They are very interesting.

today, I took some time to think (dont woory, it wont happen too often ;) )how to organise the construction site.
I will have to work a lot here, and work for my company on the same time.
I think the best way to make it, is to have a room, just for the tools ; so I make sure i dont loose any of them during the battle ; and i make sure I wont lose any time looking for them.

Lets go for the first "tool room".

stay tuned,pics are coming

In Europe it is not unusual to see an old, historic building like yours with a weathered exterior and a very modern interior. The history is preserved and the building is still useful. We do a bit of that here in the US but, unfortunately, many of out older structures were built out of wood and they are simply not economically worth the effort it takes to keep them up.

In San Francisco I've seen old brick buildings that have been gutted of EVERYTHING, wood floors, everything. Then a new structural steel building is built inside and the old building (well, the brick anyway) is tied to the new steel building but really is only a veneer. Its amazing that it can be done.
