Most guys seem to use google sketchup which is free, but I can't speak about it having a library of items, as I've never used it. I use Solidworks for all my design work, but it's a wee bit overkill for garage design.

Barring that, check out futureshop and see what they have for cheap home design software.

Edit:

Your question made me curious so I googled garage design software and found this. $30 seems ok if the software does as advertised.

I love SketchUp. It's a little difficult to use at first but once you get the hang of it, it isn't bad. It can be hard to find exactly what you want to put into your model, but there are tons of downloadable models you can use. A lot of vendors have created 3d models of their products, so you can sometimes find the exact thing you plan to put in your build.

sketchup uses default skp as extension.

i designed our house, garage, closets, technical stuff for my car lift, dressing room, light positioning, ...

just love it and its really not difficult. Also ideal to convince the missus before building something

Out of curiosity, for you Sketchup users, what file format does Sketchup use?

With the freeware, you can export PNGs, TIFFs or JPEGs as well as 3D Google Earth files and COLLADA files (whatever those are). There are other things you can export with the paid version, like animated walk-throughs.

I can help you if you want. I do custom closets, garages, pantries, and home offices. I use a software which allows me to draw out 3D images of rooms or garages. The downside is that my software used the pre-sized cabinets that my manufacturer makes. I can probably give you a rough idea of looks.

send me a Pm with what you're looking for, and i'll see what I can whip up.

I'm a fan of SketchUp too. Once you know what you want, you can literally build every stick of your shop, in the exact dimensions. It's one thing to plan your shop on paper, but once you turn it into a 3D model, you will discover things you may have not considered previously. It sure is nice to figure things out on them computer before you actually build it. As with any software, there is a bit of a learning curve, but the instructions are great and it is pretty easy to use. Once you get going it's fun.

I use Microsoft Visio. I use it on all my different projects from hot rod chassis layout to sprinkler systems. It is very easy to use.

Looks great.

Where did you get the models for your garage design using SweetHome 3D?
