Garage Lift Side Clearance

Hi All,

I am getting quotes for a garage. I am honing in on a 28x36 space with 8' doors, one 9' and one 16'. The 9' I want to be a stall for a lift so I am going to do scissor trusses over that area.

I have not looked into lifts yet, it will be a few years before I can actually add the lift to the garage. However, I need a ball park on the left/right space I need to make sure the lift is centered on the door.

I will likely need to do some investigation but wanted to lean on a few of you that already have went through this.

How tight to the wall can I keep the 9' door? 2', 3', 4'? I want to keep it as close as I can, but not too close to where I limit my options.

Lift will likely be a 4 post.

Thanks.

You can do 2' if you want, that's how mine are. I'd say it depends on how close to the side wall you'd like the lift posts to be. If you go with a narrow lift, you might want a little space between the posts and the wall - room to open the car door without worrying about hitting.

Which lift(s) do you have? I have thought about the car door. I am not terribly concerned about it, but it might be convenient. This bay will be used for work and/or storage depending on what I have going on. So, I or passengers will not be getting in and out all the time.

I just want to make sure I can get the lift ramps centered in the garage door and have enough on the wall side for the lift itself.

The one quote I got has it 2' 10" off the wall I am assuming to accommodate the pole layout.

I have a BendPak HD9XW,wide,extra tall. I can get a measurement from the ramp to the outside of the post if that will help.

Yes, if you wouldn't mind. If yours is extra wide that will give me close to worst case... I know this is just ballpark, but I am just trying to get an idea.

Can I assume that a 4-post is going to need more room on the side compared to a two-post?

Yamaha, I am leaning towards a 4 post. Stability, extended over/under parking, and not needing to do anything special with the cement pad. I have a friend who has a two post. The clearance is nice, but it is a pain to set the arms, pad heights, etc. At least it seems like that to me...

Thanks.

get rid of those 8' doors you'll end up hating them.........I know i hate mind there a pia to get anything thru.
as far as 2 post verus 4 post..........you don't need to anything special with concrete and you can do extended parking just as well as with a 4 post............and it much easier working on your cars..........just my two cents

I agree - no 8ft doors - I went 10' wide on all 3 doors, no regrets

The way i read it he is going with 1 8' tall X 9' wide door and 1 8' tall X 16' wide door

21" outside edge of ramp to the outside of the post, both sides. If the runways are in the wide position, 15" on the right side only.

The OP is talking about 8' HIGH doors.

The 2 vs 4 post lift argument is funny. They both work. It's personal preference, like what color car you like.

Yeah... 8' high. :)

Thanks. So 2' would do it, cool. I appreciate the help.

I agree on the lifts, good/bad about both. Either is better than laying on my back which is how I look at it...
