Garage Lighting wiring options

Hi,

I'm seeking guidance.

I am in need of additional lighting in my garage. I would like to have (4) 8-ft light fixtures in my 2.5 car garage. The problem is that the attic above the garage has plywood flooring, preventing me to hard wire the lighting. If I was to pry off and put back on the plywood, could I damage plywood in the process? Would I hard wire the electrical wires to the existing fixtures, while removing the old fixture?

Another option is to get the fixtures where you plug them into an outlet. I could put a power strip where the outlet is above the garage opener and have all 4 fixtures plugged in.

Take the existing light out and install a double gang box with two outlets. Go to Lowes and get four 4’ T8 four bulb light fixtures with plug in cords. The cords are around 6’ long. If you do it like this you will still be able to use the exciting switch. The lights are around $50 each. Good luck!!!

This is good as well. I have 4 of these hanging lights and they are great. T8s are nice.

I suppose you could also extend with an extension cord/power strip, but don't know how "code" that would be.

You could surface mount some surface mountable light fixtures and run EMT conduit between them all and then power them off of your existing light circuit.

Like Here: http://s.co.tt/blog/blog/2009/06/08/garage-subpanel-with-emt/

+1 You can also use a more decorative type of Wiremold conduit, sold at any local Home Center or hardware store: http://www.legrand.us/wiremold/race...aceway/500700-small-raceway.aspx#.UOMfUHcxHA0

Would both methods meet code?

I don't believe so. Either of the conduit options will, though.
