I have recently started the make over to my unattached garage. Thanks to all the wonderful threads on the Garage Journal I have been able to get a lot of good ideas that I plan to incorporate into the build of my garage. Please check back as the progress takes shape and is converted into My Garage Mahal! I will post pictures and update on what all has been done and give the history of this garage in my next post.

Okay now to give you the history behind this garage. My father and his crew of racing buddies helped him build this garage in 1987 or 1988 my dad cant quite remember and I know I was to young to even remember. I was roughly 3 years old when the garage was built. It is a 30x36 2 bay garage.

I have always wanted to get the garage finished on the inside, as a father/son project and we have finally started working on it. The biggest obstacle to overcome was the fact that 10+ years ago my grandparents built a new attached garage in the place of their old unattached garage. Before they could take down the old garage they had to move all the junk somewhere and it ended up making its way to our garage. So for the past few years we have slowly been throwing the junk out trying to make more room in the garage and I believe we are very close to having it all gone!

Last year we probably made the biggest improvements on the garage. Before winter set in we had a family friend come in and get started running the electricity and getting lights installed. By the time the winter set in we had about 95% of the wiring complete and all 6 canned lights installed. We have plans for more lighting to be installed but we are still trying to find the best lights to use. We wanted the canned lighting just for those times we run in to grab something or to allow time for the florescence to warm up.

The garage is currently wired to have 20 outlets inside plus 2 outdoor outlets (1 front, 1 back). There will be a motion light mounted over the walk through door, and 3 exterior lights mounted on the front of the garage that will match the house. Inside for lighting like I said we currently have 6 canned lights and will be adding 9 (3 rows of 3) 6-T8 bulb high bay florescent light fixtures.

It may seem like excess but you can never have to many plugins plus we want enough lighting that we do not have to fight our shadows when working in the garage.

These are the canned lights that have been installed (2 rows of 3)

Each garage door will be getting a new door and opener. I will be using a liftmaster jackshaft opener. These will take up less overhead room in the garage by mounting them on the wall next to the each garage door. I have had electrical outlets installed closer to the ceiling so this could be accomplished.

Coming in through the walk-through door here is what the lighting switch set up will look like. The first group of 3 switch will run the canned lights/front exterior/motion light over walk through. The second group of 3 will run the sections of florescent lights from closest to farthest row of lights.

We had this floor drain custom cut for the grage floor.

I'd rethink the name if it were mine. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum, a place of burial of dead people. So is the Garage Mahal a place to put a dead car ? ha ha ha

The reasoning for the name is I grew up watching Dale Earnhardt Sr. When DEI was built it was refered to as the "Garage Mahal". http://www.nascar.com/2010/news/opinion/05/29/inside.line.dcaraviello.DEI.dearnhardt.garage.mahal/story_single.html My goal is to make this my garage mahal, with racing memorabila from back when my father raced along with the numerious die cast collectobles we have aquired over the years. I want this to not only be a garage but also be a racers hangout, were the racing of past and present can be talked about.

Update: I was doing some research on the Liftmaster 3800 and was able to find a picture with the exact idea I will be doing in my garage.

I have also been doing research on the lighting and here is the light I have decided to go with. I will have 9 of these mounted in 3 rows of 3.

My plan is to get back to work on the garage here within the next few weeks and I will keep you posted as progress is made. I ask that you please leave comments and advise throughout the build.

I wanted to post a quick update. The work on the garage was put on hold while I worked on a pond renovation. I built this pond 8 years ago and it was time for a makeover. Enjoy the following photos and I hope to get back to work on my garage shortly!

Here is a photo that shows what the pond looked like prior to the renovation.
