I did a little tinkering this morning and re-did my garage music source. I had been using an old "boombox" to power a set of Bose bookshelf speakers that I had mounted at the top corners of the garage wall. Broadcast radio *****. I wanted to listen to Pandora and the old boombox did not have an aux input. I decided to use a small car amp with a 12 volt power supply to run the speakers. I just use a 3.5mm to RCA cable from my Ipad direct into the amp.

The power supply takes up a lot less space than the boom box did.

Smooth. Damn Smooth I bet that sounds pretty sweet. Wi-Fi in the garage is a tremendous step from when pops and I used to listen to a tape deck or record player. Even me and my buddies tinkering on bikes got tired of the same CD's...
Now there's so much available for music you don't need any physical media or even media on your device - if youve got a laptop or internet capable pad:
Pandora Radio
Slacker Radio
Spotify
Grooveshark
are all free - you can build play lists, save files.. share play lists and create stations with buddies..
I just started using Google Music - it lets you upload all your stored files to a network storage space for you to access anywhere..
I'm using a set of PC speakers with a powered sub in my garage - not the best sound, but it works until I upgrade my house set up and move the bigger guns outside..

 This is the set up that I have in my barn on top of the keger, it's a Sherwood tuner, with a combined amp, with big ol' pioneer speakers which are at least 25 yrs old. I can turn this up loud and can here it out on the road clearly, which is about 200 ft out. The wife complains she can really here it in the house, with the doors and windows shut, it drives her crazy. I listen mostly to oldies, 50's to 70's. There are two smaller speakers that accompany the pioneers, in a space that's 20x25. No distortion, just good tunes!!:beer:

For now I just use my Droid while I'm in the garage. I put on Pandora & crank up the volume. It works for now. I can't wait to get something better especially since I have two big speakers hanging on the walls from the previous owner.

LOL I have in the past done the same thing, wired up a car stereo stuff i had sitting around for shop music....

This time around i bought a new 1000W Sony surround sound system and 40" LCD tv for the new garage... bad thing is i wont be ready to install them for a few months hahahahahaha!

If you buy the right surround sound system you get audio in evey area of the shop, WIFI link, aux input, ipod dock, onboard drive (to copy music and video to the harddrive), and then the good old HDMI to hook the computer to, and much more!

I like my slacker radio :)

Bought a $40 clock radio iPhone doc at Sams. A little wireless and Pandora and we're good. I also have my 80s half working cassette box for those old Beach Boys and Jan & Dean tapes. They sound kinda special when played just this side of mono.

Found a home entertainment system (5 speakers and sub, 5 disc cd/radio, etc) when I started cleaning my garage. It had been sitting in my shed for 3 years and I thought it was broken but decided to hook it up and see what I could salvage. Turned out it works. Hook up my iPod or Zoom to it on Pandora or podcasts. It is loud enough to disturb the neighbors.....which I don't want to be "that guy" so I keep the volume down to a respectable level.

I use a car radio that can play mp3 discs. It is wired to some old home stereo speakers I have mounted a bit overhead. Mostly listen to 80's pop music but have some Amy Grant and Rob Zombie thrown in for good measure.

I've got a little boombox thing with a cd player, tape deck, tuner, and detachable speakers. Got it from an old roomate who was going to toss it when we moved. I also have a Sony iPod docking thing from a company Xmas dinner a few years ago. Drop my iPod in it and rock out.

I have had my shop wired for internet for a few years now as I use a computer for looking up wiring diagrams for vehicles. So I use either Slacker radio or I-tunes. With I-Tunes through my home network, I can access the playlist from the computer in the house which has LOTS of music on it. If that's not enough I also have satellite music, probably 50-60 different channels all free and legit (not pirated).
These are all hooked up to a nice beefy Kenwood home theatre receiver and a set of old Sony tower speakers up on a shelf. When I'm working out there some nights I like to crank it up a bit so I don't hear the drone of the saws, grinders or any other tool I might be working with.

I wired the whole house for AV, 'net, and automation. The garage has 4x 8" in ceiling speakers and a 10" boxed sub in one corner. All running off a standard HTR receiver. I can stream iTunes, Pandora, or whatever else over wifi to it or plug in whatever device locally with a 3.5mm jack. Also, everything is in place (including a cantilever wall mount) to put a display on the wall. This will be nice to put up diagrams, manuals on the laptop, or watch some tube while working. Sometimes when I'm working I get random neighbors come up my driveway to have a listen or chat about the garage.

You can use any number of devices to stream Pandora.

I have a setup in my tool truck using an old iPhone in wifi mode running a slideshow on a TV and streaming Pandora via my verizon hotspot.

Right now I have an iPod hooked up to a set of 2.1 computer speakers on my bench. Works decent enough for now, but since the iPod went through the wash one day it doesn't hold a charge much anymore.

I just busted out my college stereo and speakers to put in the shop. I have an old Sony receiver from the mid 90s with 100 watt output connected to a pair of 12" Pioneer floor speakers. Years and years ago, I blew out the factory subs in the floor speakers. I replaced them with a pair of Blaupunkt car subs. I installed power resistors on both speakers to make up the 4 ohm difference between the factory subs and cars subs. The car subs hit a lot harder then the factories ever did(no wonder the blew out). I love cranking up some ACDC or Metallica when the kids are in the house. Brings back the memories of playing loud music in the locker room before a football game. I use my smart phone or Ipod touch to play tunes. My father n law has a pair of 12" Jenson floor speakers that I can have. That might be overkill but I might have to try it.

In the garage I have a home theatre surround system with a powered sub. The Receiver doesn't play DVDs anymore but it will play CDs and has auxillary inputs for the Ipod. That is plenty of noise in the garage. The powered sub hits pretty descent for occasional listening. When the kids aren't around, there is nothing better than cranking up the tunes!

I have an older Sony receiver hooked up to some Polk Audio bookshelf speakers with an cassette deck and an old DVD player (plays CD's). Receiver has aux jacks so I can stream pandora, spotify, grooveshark, etc via laptop. But usually I just listen to CD's. I have a huge collection (over 3,000), most of which are bootlegs. No illegal ones, of course. ;^)

Older denon receiver with Denon 5 CD player hooked up to 4 Polk Audio bookshelf speakers. Receiver has auxillary inputs for other sources so I have other avenues for music source.

OK, I've got a yard sale Yamaha surround sound receiver and speakers in the garage. My question is can I hook the output from the sound card in my desktop to the inputs of the Yamaha without wires? How would you go about that?

I use a Yamaha receiver, Denon CD player with a pair of Polk Concert series speakers. I too stream XM and Pandora through the system. Favorite music while working is Pink Floyd. The creative juices really flow while " The Wall " fills the shop air

We don´t have Pandora here in Sweden, but my guess is that it´s a bit like Spotify!?

But no matter what, I need me one of those iPad´s for GJ (I see that you does that) etc...:):):)

Right now just a crappy old stereo (radio or AUX in) with decent quality TV speakers from a broken flat screen. The speakers were detachable and as slim as a flat screen, so I plan to use them in a better manner when I get a new shop/garage. Thinking I'll recess them into the wall somewhere. I also have some Sony home theater tower speakers that hit really hard (even right off my iPod) that will accompany the other two in the new space. Come on new space!!

I just let the voices in my head sing to me. Sometimes they get out of sync, and sometimes they aren't even all singing the same song, but it's cheap entertainment.

Still need to hook some items up but I bought this little IR remote on Ebay for 20.00. have one in the house and it works great!

all of my sterio equipment is tucked away in one closet dust free and out of sight. with this IR device I just ran a piece of cat 5 wire to the rooms i want (1 to the garage) and I can control the sterio, TV DVD,DVR CD player, basically everything in the closet with a remote in the garage or from whatever room I am in. even putting one on the back patio.

this is the small unit, in the photo there is one sensor, with the wire. it glues/tapes to the front of a sterio,or electronic item right where the little blinking light is for the remote, plugs into the junction box, then a cat 5 wire runs to the other rooms and hooks to the outlet looking piece. to use you point the remote at the outlet looking piece and it ends the signal to the recievers.

this little box would control up to 8 devices. looking for a deal on ebay I was able to control each device remotly fo about 8.00 each

there is also a small power cord that comes with it that is not in the photos

I have an old Pioneer Amp/Tuner running pioneer bookshelf speakers (15+ years old and I am still impressed with the sound the produce. I also have a JBL Creature set up that I plug my iPhone into to listen to Pandora. Next step is purchase and install a flat screen somewhere!

Ipad does not stay in the garage all the time. I just plug it in when I am out there. I dont have any concerns about dust. I have an otterbox cover on it and it is pretty well protected.

Seems nice and compact. Might have to try something similar with the Android phone I have. I prefer iHeartRadio to Pandora though
