First of all, let me say this is a great forum. Many of you have the neatest garages and shops, and I didn't even know this forum existed until a few weeks ago. My question(or should I say the first of many) I own a few acres of farm ground about 20 miles from my house in town. I am thinking of putting up a pole barn type of storage for camper and boat and whatever else. Does anybody have any suggestions for security, other than not having any ground level windows. After reading these posts, I am thinking maybe about 30X60 with both a sliding door and an overhead door. The camper is close to 12' tall. My other idea is to find a cheap house in town and put up a big building in the back yard, then rent out the house to students. I am not real big on being a landlord, though. Thanks for any suggestions.

Better off with an occupied house and a storage building/area behind it versus all by itself.

I also recommend no matter where you put the buidling, build a GOOD fence around it, and keep the grass down.

If you do not have anyone living there and don't have a very good security system, you will get hit easily by the first crack head that finds out about it. With the advent of battery powered grinders/saws, they don't need a window or a door to gain entrance, they just make their own. In this area, they have been known to go thru sheet metal walls, stud walls with siding and even block or brick (sledge hammer) if there wasn't anyone around to hear them.

In addition to security issues, there are usability and zoning issues. A shop far from your main residence will not see much use. And zoning rules probably will NOT allow you to put up an accessory building without a main residence first. How about your present property?

Any neighbors near your farm acreage? If so, get friendly with them. People outside of town tend to look out for their neighbors (if on friendly terms with them). If you have a neighbor within line of sight of your land and they have a few dogs, that would help. Best burglar alarm is a good dog.

If your farm acreage is 20 miles from your house, how often would you get in the car and drive there? Probably not convenient for a shop, since its not close by.

I agree with the rest, an unoccupied garage with no one round is an invitation to miscreants either vandalizing or taking your property. I have friends who have a deer hunting camps in rural Central GA an they have had everything stolen that wasn't nailed down. I live in a fairly rural area where crime is not an issue...but we live here year round and our neighbors (1/8 mile away) all know everyone and look out for each other. Any suspicous characters would probably be greeted at gunpoint. YMMV.

FWIW, I grew up in rural central Alabama. Back in the day, there was literally never a burglary. Today, a big dog inside the house is the only way to be sure your TV will still be there when you come home at night. Meth has done rurn'd them good old boys.

Not what I was wanting to hear, but what I was afraid of. It would be on a paved often used road, but unfortunatly nobody lives close by. I kick myself in the behind every time I write my rent check for storage garage-woulda coulda shoulda done things differently.

I had this happen, kids with gas and matches. Still worth it and I have rebuilt, only metal this time and no ground level windows.

You do need to keep this in mind!
