I am beginning a search for decent overhead cabinets for the garage. I know there is a very wide range of options out there and I am looking more fore quality than price. Having said that, price is always a factor in any sort of purchase. What would your choice be? I would love Strongholds but way out of the budget for me, at the other end of the spectrum there are the cheapies that the big box stores sell, I don’t want those. Given those parameters, What would be your recommendations? I need 8’ of cabinets with possibly more after.

Keep an eye on Slickdeals for when Gladiator stuff goes on mega-clearance. I picked up 3 of their wall cabinets and the mounting slot wall for $110 total last Fall, with home delivery included. I don't know if you consider those to be "cheapies" from a big box store though.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy the "AI-slop-name" brand cheapies from Amazon. I was close to buying a bunch for $50 a piece last year and the reviews were atrocious. You can usually spot these as Chinese resellers when their name is 2-3 English words mashed together in an unintelligible manner.

If you don't already have a theme/style going, you could also consider recycling kitchen cabinets. I see local ad listings where people are selling their kitchen cabinets dirt cheap to make way for a probably-unnecessary remodel. Some of it is really nice stuff for next to nothing.

I will avoid anything from Amazon for sure, not that I don’t buy things from there but for cabinets they are not going to cut it for me, I have looked. I will have a look at Gladiator thanks for the heads up on the sale!

I got kitchen wall cabinets from the Habitat ReStore for my garage. Way out of date style wise, but sturdy and cheap.

Got lucky and snagged a bunch of cabinets from a doctors office/lab at Habitat Restore. Someone on GJ had suggested to keep an eye out for them as they're typically heavier duty than kitchen cabinets.

Does anyone know what the height of a cabinet over a work bench should be? Is there a standard? All the web sight seem to want to give me kitchen cabinet heights. Are the the same? Cabinets are 36”W 30” tall and 14”deep. I am a shortass @ 5’6 but still like a decent distance between the work bench and upper cabinets

A friend was facilities manager at a local college. When they remodeled the chemistry lab all the old cabinets were going to be tossed out, so I got a trailer load of them for free. Very sturdy. Unfortunately the countertops were made of a composite that contained asbestos so they had to go to the landfill, they would have been great for garage use.

I would decide based on your kitchen cabinets. You already know if they are OK or not. Make a 1-2-3" adjustment if you want and go from there.

Also look at HD and L and whatever similar stores around you for ladders. We have a little 3 step ladder that stays in a closet. It's about 3ft tall and 4-5" thick leaned against the wall. It comes out and pops open one handed. Super nice for our tall kitchen cabinets that I can't reach the top shelf of.

If anything like kitchen (upper) wall cabinets will suffice, get some used ones - often free.

You may not want very many though. I've moved mine around 3-4 times now. Seems I get more of what I want with made-in-place shelving and bins.

Kitchen cabinets from Habitat ReStore or big box store damaged returns is a great option; the cost savings is a major benefit. I have installed many kitchen cabinets in garages and basement workshops (both uppers and lower base cabinets). Talk to local remodeling contractors in your area and you might score a great deal; offer to remove them yourself. Base cabinets can be beefed up to support strong work bench surfaces that could support metal or woodworking vises. Options are endless.

I should add... Kitchen base cabinets have proved useless to me (in the shop). The stuff I keep under workbench height tends to be heavy and bulky, often better with wheels on it. They are also not sturdy enough to support a shop workbench.

I have recycled kitchen cabinets as a temporary solution. They’ve been there for ten years, so temporary is a relative term. My wife was coerced into volunteering to paint them white so they all more or less match, so maybe that’s her next project.

I have too many higher priority things going on to worry about trashy looking cabinets, but that’s a personal choice on my part.

Base cabinets are ok as long as you have room for a real dedicated workbench for the heavy /dirty work.

The bigger issue with base cabinets is that the undercounter storage isn’t real space efficient or accessible. I would like to eventually get rid of the kitchen base cabinets I have and replace them with several (HF?) cabinets tied together with a continuous countertop.

I don’t think I can justify the budget for purpose built, dedicated commercial storage solutions.

I build what I need with lumber. Often times used lumber.

A strategy that's worked for me is to place the heavy storage items where they need to be. Then prop up a piece of plywood or countertop, on top. Then figure out where to build the supports.

One of our garages has the builders cabinets removed from our kitchen during the remodel. The other garage, my workshop, has Home Depot; Mills Pride, cabinets.

Your use will determine a lot. I see you are speaking of overhead/wall hung over bench cabinets. Do you wood work? Obviously making your own customs will be best in most cases if you can. You can size to the space, You can size to a specific tool or jig or kit or whatever you want to store and access.

Are you storing heavy items? Items that can leak? Large items?

In my shed I used the bare wood cheap self assembly cabinets from a box store I wiped on a couple coats of shellac on the fronts I had lying around that need to be used up. I store a lot of lighter weight stuff in them. I have them mounting through their backs and through their tops into a continuous 2x4 that runs the length of them across the ceiling joists. I also added a 3/8" bolt rod in the center where the two doors meet to help prevent sagging.

I used these basically in a shed, above my tough system boxes that only had a 7ft ceiling height.

They go together fast. They were cheap enough at the time (they were on sale for like $70 a cabinet?) and with a little effort you can improve them in some ways. Add some construction adhesive during assembly. Add some additional screws to where the box edges join. Make sure they have solid backing on the backs and possibly tops to improve. They are still cheap particle board ikea boxes however.

If time and aesthetics are not important, plenty of home remodels chuck the old cabinets. Would keep an eye out for some old solid wood trash cabinets. Lots of solid pine and oak cabinets are getting chucked with plain solid face doors. Might even consider calling around to kitchen contractors and see if you could get hired as labor to demo the cabinets from a job or two of theirs and go that route.

I don't have any information about heavier duty metal cabinets to offer.

Might also consider going a wall mounted packout or dewalt or rigid or other plastic tool box storage depending on your needs. Or open shelves.

You sort to need to define the use for yourself and go from there. Also remember that almost any storage solution can look clean if its kept similar and cohesive. All the same size and shape and color milk crates or whatever on shelves can look clean and neat if the storage solution is kept cohesive. Function should lead form in a garage though imho.

Not so much a wood worker, more into automotive stuff but also home repairs and the like. Not much of a chance of me making my own cabinets, skill level and tooling are the hang ups there.

I purchased these two overhead cabinets for my two car garage at Habitat for $30 each. Sanded down and painted with SW oil based paint, color keyed primer and gloss. My one car workshop has new lower cabinets I purchased unfinished at HD twelve years ago. The cabinets have particle board bottoms that have sagged after 12 years also painted with SW oil based.
