Garage paint question

I'm getting ready to paint my garage walls, trim, ceiling, etc. Garage is used for 2 cars and living space at times. Interior of it is not subjected to harsh weather, I'm in central Ky. I have been told a good exterior paint would be a wise choice for the garage. I need to be able to buy it at Lowes, any suggestions are appreciated. I would like it to be able to wipe down easily and last a long time. Thanks

I'd roll two coats of oil based Kilz on it and follow it with some paint that would allow some cleaning. Most of the stuff out there is some form of latex. . . .thanks EPA.

I'm using a satin finish for the walls and semi gloss for my cabinets. All latex paint.

The key is good surface prep with clean walls. There are a number of brands of paint at lowes from Behr to Glidden. The Behr stuff goes on a bit weird as it is a primer and paint in one and to me anyway, it just looks funny at first and I seem to want to go back over it too much. Have to learn to leave it once you get it rolled in.

I sold paint for 6-1/2 years, but I admit it's BEEN many years since I did and paint has changed. Still, exterior flat paint is INTENDED to "chalk" to a minor degree to keep itself clean over (typically) a decade or more before repaint. If you opt for exterior paint (I wouldn't) remember that and choose a satin or semi gloss.

Has it previously been painted? If no, prime it. I'd suggest Kilz too but I don't THINK they make it in "oil base". I think they DO make the original formulation in alcohol base, meaning "shellac" based. It works great but is more work to clean up. If its already been painted & is adhering I'd not prime. Don't fall for the more expensive "primer+paint" stuff. I call scam on that stuff. Post Before & After photos please!

If you have to buy it from Lowes, then get Olympic exterior satin, Stay far away from Valspar

The floor is done in a dark gray with white, blue, and black speckles. I'm thinking of painting the base trim a matching gray to the floor, walls a light gray, ceiling an off white, framing around the windows would be white that matches the ceiling. Also crown molding will be placed and I would match it to the dark gray on the base trim. Cabinets will either be dark wood or dark gray. My wife thinks dark wood cabinets will not look good, she prefers a dark gray. I think the dark wood adds warmth while gray cabinets would make for a sterile, cold enviroment. I have a stereo, tv, lazy boy, fridge, etc. in the garage so I relax there alot. Its a 2 car garage, oversized, about 660 sg ft. Any ideas on paint colors or thoughts is appreciated.

According to Kilz website, it's an oil based primer. I used it in my garage but you had me wondering and had to look.

Hmmmm,I think you should start a build thread on your garage. I'd also suggest using Photobucket to host your pictures.

I went interior high gloss (On top of primer of course) 25 years ago in my garage, and haven't had to go back and repaint yet. The only deterioration is where I put a hole to hang something and later took it down... Why High gloss? Same reason you go for gloss in a kitchen; you can clean it when splattered...

I used Valspar Sandstone for the interior of my garage. It has a texture and covers imperfections well. It took 3 coats and almost 6 gallons to paint my oversize 2 car garage but the end result looks really nice.

Exterior paint is definitely your best bet with the garage. Lowe's has tons of options, but you can also buy the paint online. There are many retailers online that sell great exterior paint. What color is your house? I think you should try to match it with whatever your house color is. A nice satin finish would look nice, too, on the garage. If you want the paint to last longer, make sure you prep well. Prepping well is going to set you up for an overall longer-lasting paint life.
