Background:
Late Summer 2009, we bought a fixer-upper house. We spent about 5 months living in our old house and fixing this one. Because of dual house notes and a renter in waiting, I did most of it and all of what we had to do to get in. Then I was burnt out. Stuff is still unfinished.
We managed to stack the garage full of junk. I have 2 golf carts, 2 lawn tractors, two tool chests plus we had garbage bins, garage sale items, kids bikes, toys, clothes, christmas decorations, etc in there.
I wanted to build a shop. Then I realized I needed a storage building and a shop. I'm still in hock due to the remodel and the tree cutting and the new drive way ugh.
Finally I realized how I could make things happen and not cost an arm and a leg - I'd reclaim my attached garage and use it! I made a deal on a 12x20 portable building. I had to wait on the weather, but it was delivered Thursday. I hired a family teen helper today and we went to work.
We built a shelf (took longer than I thought) in the shed and it worked out fine. We stacked the one shelf and the shed so we could clean out the garage at least this once.
The shelf
The garage is a pretty nice size for a guy who has never had one. I sold my race car in 2009 because I wasn't active in racing due to the kids and I had no place to store it away from the weather.
Plans are going to be very basic. Paint, clean, organize, build benches and shelves, improve lighting.
The drive-in garage portion is roughly 21ft 10in wide 21ft 4in deep. Then there is a section chopped out by the laundry room and not a straight shot from the garage door that is 8ft 10in wide 15ft 3in deep.
That picture is what I am starting with after the initial cleanout. That golfcart is one of my projects.
I don't have everything laid out yet, but I have some ideas from here and other forums with sections like this.
If I have one complaint about the garage, its that my truck doesn't fit even into an empty garage. Well... it fits in the sense that it will enter the garage and the door will close but then you have to go through, over or under to get to the other side. Its not really like I could work on that vehicle in the garage.
I've got $4400 in the shed including the added shelving, purchase, taxes and all. I'm thinking less than $6000 to get a very usable garage space.
I'll only be working one day per weekend on it max, but I'll try to make progress and keep you guys posted.
