Hi, new here, been a lurker for a while.
I have finally decided to go ahead and build a new garage.
my old one is very poorly laid out and is a PIA.
is 20 wide x 40 deep with one 8 ft door on the 20 wide side.
narrow and deep.
I can put 2 cars in it end to end with just enough room to walk around.
I like to work on cars, mechanic stuff and restorations.
I built a rotissare and had that and the parts to a car in the garage and its full.
My new garage is roughly going to be 30 ft deep x 50 ft wide.
I plan on heating with hydronic lines in the floor. Maybe assist with wood stove.
2 9'-7" overhead doors.
I plan on using it for automotive restoration work, general farting around.
I plan on having a small area on end for a machine shop. Mill, lathe, bead blast cabinet, parts washer. Probably some wood working stuff also, table saw etc.
My biggest concern is a hoist for working on cars. I have yet to get my mind around height and type of hoist req'd.
I am thinking of going to a 2 post hoist (Mohawk?), I like the under frame lift so you can work on pretty much what ever you want.
I would go to a scissors truss in the area over the hoist and regular (Storage?) trusses on the ends.
I am in the Frozen Tundra so A/C is not req'd but heating is a major concern.
The only thing I dont like is the issue of insulating and covering the attic between the 2 types of trusses.
Another is builder is talking 24" centers on trusses. 16" on walls.
Is that going to be enough to support storage and ceiling?
Another concern is with old garage when I parked my daily driver in it in the winter (it was heated) the snow melt from the car would raise the humidity of the garage such that I'd have ice on the windows, water running down the walls beneath the windows, bare metal would rust and I'd have puddles in the garage for weeks. Unless I'd turn the heat up to 70-75 and take a week to dry things out. Normally I kept the temp at 55ish, plenty warm enough to work out in a garage.
So I am thinking a floor drain in the stall for the daily driver. what are concerns with this over just pitching the floor to the overhead door and pushing the water-runoff out every now and then?
any thoughts and I wish I'd done things from the experts here?
